Stopping motability car scheme?

Been on the motability car scheme for years but in the last few months I have been thinking of not getting another one after my current one goes back. The reason I'm thinking of stopping is that I'm on high rate motability, they are taking a HUGE chunk from me every week and only leaving me with £77 a week from it.

Also in my honest opinion, they are highly taking advantage of disabled people. If something happens which isn't your fault, they can't wait to charge an additional £75. For example last week, parked car on the drive way and someone had stolen the back whipper and also scratched the paint work on the back bumper and was caught on security camera. After failed attempts from the police to find this person, I was told I still had to pay £75 for the scratch, £40 for a new whipper and a additional £28 to fit it :( which in total is a £143!

Why should I pay it when I did not cause it? My opinion, the scheme is a total con and after some investigating, I would be cheaper to buy my own car and use my disability payments on that and most likely not take such a huge chunk the way motability are doing.

Thats your choice though, maybe get a cheaper car on the scheme.

Why didn't you just leave the scratch and replace the whipper (not suire what this is) yourself.

My motability car got pranged by a car door and caused a little dent motability were not in the least bit interested and paid the good condition bonus on it's return.

If you buy your own car, you have to pay your own insurance, servicing, mot etc so it's swings and roundabouts.

I awlays thought the scheme was a good option, but it unto there own.

How can it be they're taking advantage of the disabled. You're given a choice, you don't have to take the car you can just have the cash and then sort out your own mobility. Some may choose to have no car and simply use their benefits to get taxis.

I hardly think disabled people are being taken advantage of....The chance to drive a brand new car every 3 years, free tyres, free insurance, free tax and free maintenance... And then there is the free option of partaking in the scheme or not, also the choice of a cheaper car which leaves some of your mobility allowance in your bank.

    HiYa Emma,

    - you are not on high rate motability, you are on high rate mobility component of DLA or other qualifying benefit which is currently £56.75 a week
    - I would never choose a motabilty scheme option, others swear by the scheme and would never consider another alternative
    - a 'toe rag' scratching your vehicle and snaffling a wiper would have happened with any unprotected vehicle
    - £68 for the supply and fitting of a wiper blade. A half decent Bosch blade £8, fit yourself in two minutes cost free
    - I'm sorry the baddies got at your car but that's not the fault of the motability scheme
    - there are plenty of other lease options if you look around, or buy your own and get the free car tax benefit

    Best of luck.

If the car was a private one owned by you then you would still have to pay to fix the damage.

If your unhappy with the price quoted for the wiper, get it done elsewhere.

Hey, however you do run the risk of losing the mobility entitlement at any time. This always results in the car be taken off you.

How are they taking advantage? By charging you for the use of a vehicle? Essentially you are renting the car, which if done privately, could be in excess of £40 a day. So actually you're getting a good deal considering you get a new vehicle every 3 years, don't have do do various things to it...

Not to mention, I'm going to assume you don't work? How else would you get a car if you didn't opt into the scheme? You're unlikely to be approved for a loan, HP etc, and saving up on your DLA is likely to take a very long time to pay for a car. And even if you did, I'm sure it wouldn't be the brand spanking new car you're driving around in from mobility.

The exact same reason I would have to pay if someone stole my wiper blade & scratched my car! Someone has to foot the bill.

If it is cheaper (which is wouldn't be) then do it! You'd be mad not to... ;)

Hey, have you ever owned a car of your own and had the doors keyed, the wing mirrors forcibly removed as well as the rear window smashed with a brick?
Then not knowing who did it, you are either left to drive the car as it is, have it repaired at your cost or go through your comprehensive insurance policy only to find that next year they load the premium because you made a claim.
Unfortunately what has happened to you and 1,000's of others is an everyday experience. It is just one of those extra costs that a car owning society has to accept.
