Car Tax reminder..
Hi, I have a few different vehicles and always pay my road tax when the reminder comes through. Today I have received a letter from dvla enforcement saying I've failed to tax my car.
I have not received either a remider or a final reminder for this vehicle and am obviously keen to tax it now this has been brought to my attension. However this is the first notification I have had regarding it and I dont see why I should pay a fine for not paying the tax on time if I haven't been asked to.
I appreciate I might have noticed the disc was out of date but with other cars also running with old discs now its hardly something you are going to act on.
Anyway the phone number on the letter says its not for disputes and only for making payment. To dispute it i have to write to them. I obviously don't dispute the tax needs paying but the fact ive been fined for something i wasn't notified about.
Any suggestions or previous experience of this?!

The reminder is courtesy and not an obligation for the DVLA, it is an obligation as you as the person responsible to know when the cars you have are due for their renewal. Because there is no obligation for the DVLA to send the reminder you have very little chance of succeeding in an appeal but there is no harm in trying.0

Unfortunately it is your responsibility to make sure you renew your tax on time, the fact that you never received a renewal notice is no excuse it may have gone astray in the post, there is nothing to dispute.0 -
So lets say they stop sending reminders. There is nothing on the car now to suggest it needs renwewing. What are the chances that a good percentage of people don't realise? I say very high. People have better things to do then check every 5 minutes if the tax needs renewing and without a disc now how do you quickly check anyway?
If you rely on the reminders and they don't arrive thats not my fault is it? How 2 can go missing is beyond me.0 -

As already stated it is your choice if you rely on the reminders and not the DVLA's problem if you do not receive them, whether you like it or not it is entirely your responsibility to renew your tax on time, there are such things as diaries or you can even set reminders up on a phone, tablet or computer.0 -
Checking every 5 minutes is probably not the best use of your time.0

Try putting the renewal date(s) in your diary/online calendar/piece of paper and perhaps stop blaming others for your error.0 -
Given the recent changes in car tax regulation, I would personally opt for the monthly direct debit scheme. Shock horror - government makes paying tax easy!
Alternatively perhaps someone could come up with a small business to manufacture a small (say 3 inch diameter) circle of paper for people to place in their windscreen printed with a reminder of when their vehicle excise duty payment is due? Perhaps coloured differently for each year?
They could call it something like a "tax disc"
It might catch on, you never know!Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
