  • Making the bed as soon as you get out of it in the morning makes the bedroom look tidier straight away, open the curtains/blinds and fling open the window (if only for a couple of seconds) to freshen the air. Get dressed, fold pyjamas or take laundry straight down to washing machine and the bedroom is sorted within a few minutes of getting up.

On a Monday I strip the beds to wash the bedding.

I don't iron very much at all. Just school uniform really.

Limit the toys available to children, we keep about half their toys in the loft and put things up and bring things down to keep them interested. If they are no longer playing with something after it has already been into the loft and reintroduced it goes to the charity shop (with the child's agreement of course)

Use the same mug all day instead of taking out a fresh one each time you make a drink (something I was particularly bad for)

Keep shopping/ carrier bags in the car and a couple in your handbag ready for when you need them.

I make the bed as soon as I am out of the shower. I clean the shower before I dress. I don't have too much of anything ie, 2 complete bedsets for each bed, No handtowels in bathroom as they always look messy so bathtowels only - 1 each in use and 2 each in cupboard. Toiletries I have 1 of each in use and 1 of each spare. Behind each loo I keep 1 loo cleaner and 1 bath/sink cleaner and I only buy replacements when they are nearly empty. Cloakroom has 3 handtowels on the shelf and 1 in use. I clean the cloakroom every night before bed - just a quick rub round the basin and loo cleaner down toilet as nobody uses it until morning. Bathroom I do the other way round as we are downstairs during the day. I also tidy the sitting room before I go to bed and do any washing up etc so the kitchen is tidy to come down too. I don't let paperwork build up but deal with issues asap.

What on earth are you doing with your toilets that they need cleaning every day?!

  • Some great idea's I'll be putting some of these into practice as at the moment I don't have any sort of routine . I am in the process of decluttering so when it's done I want to be able to keep on top of it

    • A place for everything and everything in its place (especially useful in a houseful of people with different ideas about where things should 'live')
    • Handle everything only once
    • Never go upstairs or downstairs empty-handed
    • De-clutter seasonally - spring, summer, autumn, winter
    • Fit your stuff to your storage, not the other way round
    • You can't clean what you can't get to - keep surfaces clutter free and storage spaces organized and not too full
    • Decide how much time you want to allow for cleaning and work out your routine to suit - set your own standards, don't worry about what anyone else says/does

I use one cleaning wipe to swish the whole bathroom every morning and do the same in the Ds loo every night. This way they never look as if they need cleaning. That's what I am aiming for.

I do a lot of what has already been suggested but my tip is that if you see something that needs doing - do it. Even if you don't have time to make a proper job of it better that than leave it until later.

It's all about keeping on top of things.

Wipe the oven over every time you use it.

Get rid of the ironing basket, do it straight away.

Aim to have a clear draining board most of the time.

Sweep the house once a day for things that need rehoming.

    Don't let washing pile up.

I admit paperwork is my downfall and I have never really worked out a proper system for dealing with it!

The other poster said that they put (environment damaging) cleaner down both toilets every day. That should be completely unnecessary.

The following are mainly to do with de cluttering, and handed down to me by my mum...

For every new item 'in' move something 'out'.
If you haven't worn it for a year - pass it on.
If a room/area is so bad you don't know where to begin, start tidying from one side, and move around in a systematic way till it's done.
Never leave a room empty handed.

A thought a friend passed on to me regarding belongings...

Judge everything by how much do you love it/useful is it/sentimental value attached. Make everything in your house earn it's place there. After all - it is taking up space that you are paying for with your rent/mortgage etc.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!
