Bank charges & Visa Debit cards

I have been with Nationwide since 2005 with a Flexicard & I have been charged £600+ bank charges. I have been on a money management course with CAP to help with finances and IVA debt whilst being on benefits. Recently I have jd bank charges even though there is money into the account. This is mainly due to Asda supermarket holding money with Visa on an online order, the. On delivery requesting a further amount (paying double). This happened over Christmas & the bank froze my Christmas spending money I saved for my child. I went away over the New Year and the hotel has done the same. I have put £150 cash into the account, yet I am -£300 and cannot use the account to buy food for my child. What is happening? Who is to blame? I approach the bank & the staff say it's the company, the company blame the bank & I'm the one who does all the work and gets charged for the privilege...

  • If you book into a hotel they will put a hold on a sum of money on your card - it is called earmarking. This normally drops off within a week of chechout.
If you have been charged £600+ in charges it is because you have been using their money without permission - its as simple as that.
Why not try to get out the debt mire by taking cash out of the ATM and not using your card for purchases - this means if you don't have the cash you don't get to buy the goods.

If this does not work for you then you need to open a seperate bank account and use this for purchases such as hotel stays and use the Nationwide for essentials.
  • It appears that Asda have collected authorisation for the estimated amount that your online shop should add up to, then when they have put the amount through the till, they have gained authorisation again and this causes the issue you have described.

If anyone is to blame, it is Asda, as they could use the first authorisation code for the payment.
