Working for the Jobcentre...

Options
I often think this would be something I would like to do, help those out of work, find employment.

Does anyone on here work as a 'job coach' ? Or any other similar role?

Where do these roles get advertised?

TIA.

I often wondered how these type of jobs get advertised too. I would love to work for the benefit fraud investigation team ie on the phone's.

  • an ex-colleague of mine couldn't handle the pressure and stress of a recruitment agency, she heard of a local charity that were looking for an employment advisor to help people off benefits and into work, advise on training course and get government funding to do these training courses.
it is a lot less pressure than the sales environment of recruitment and she felt she was helping people.

it was advertised in the local paper and the charity jumped at the chance to employ someone with recruitment experience. the downside is that the post is subject to funding and she has to go year by year, however she has been there 9 years so far and loves it.

im in recruitment and it is difficult, but it is a private company, commercial environment. Jobs in the job center, im assuming, are public sector and not outsourced to a private company. so is there a civil service website for public sector jobs that these type of vacancies are advertised on?

Don't think it is all plain sailing - your hands will be tied by beauraucracy, there is only so much you can do for people, you will meet all sorts of people, some who want to find work, some who are just there to fulfil the requirements to get their JSA each week and you cant be seen to be giving different treatment between these types.

    1) Job centre staff are not there to help people find jobs - they are there to keep a lid on how much money the Government pays out to people not in work.

    2) People using job centres are not there to find jobs - they are there to try and obtain money from the Government instead of working.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
  • They're part of the civil service, so you would have to check their recruitment pages.

If you want one of the least rewarding jobs there are, both financially and work related, then go for it!

There are people working in the JC that aren't employed by the Dwp. They like everyone else are slowly getting privatised. I've only been signing on a couple of months but i've been sent twice now to see people who appear to be sub-contractors. We've seen numerous threads on these forums where private firms are paid just to get you off the numbers into fake jobs.

I'm certainly not saying you're wrong SailorSam, just that I've not heard about that or come across any.

My job centre did nothing to help me find work, and when I asked if they had any info on agencies specialising in my area they told me that wasn't what they were there for. My job coach knew nothing about my field and although apparently well meaning, was as much use on the job hunting front as a chocolate teapot.
Not my idea of job satisfaction having to meet sanction targets whether justified or not.
I'm also a little sceptical about the funding and training to get people back into work. My CV had justbeen updated and was doing its job as I was getting interviews, but they still wanted me to spend a day reviewing it to meet their targets and look like they were doing something. I refused as it would have been a pointless exercise, which didn't go down well. I don't have an issue with doing training I need, such as computer refresher training, but doing something just for the sake of ticking a box goes against the grain.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
