Get the neighbour a very large bunch of flowers and nice bottle of wine. She has saved you a whole heap of trouble.

Agreed. At least the OP knows that they will have a very good neighbour when they finally move into the property.

Mid December a young woman arrived at the house, called out a locksmith claiming she'd lost her keys and had the locks changed on the front door.

Did she have some forged paperwork to show the locksmith?

It's shocking to think that she could get the locks changed without proving she lived at the house.

I'd be asking questions about the locksmith too.

I suspect you have the best security installed already......A good neighbour !

Our sentiments exactly... but who knows what 'professionals' out there will turn a blind eye for a quick £150 in the back pocket :(

The estate agents have re-changed the locks again since using a locksmith i've been given the details of so i will be chasing them up for a receipt of works done for peace of mind. Will till be fitting our own as soon as we're in though!

Yep. Every locksmith I've ever used has asked to see proof that the house is mine (ID with proof of address, etc). However, there are bound to be a small minority who will do a cash job without proof. Or, if the woman was running an elaborate scam, she's probably capable of knocking up some fake utility bills.

My tip would be never use a locksmith to change a lock, they charge an arm and a leg. Use a carpenter or odd-job man, if you don't want to do it yourself.

For example, I wanted a Chubb security lock adding to my front door. Locksmith quoted £150. Got the job done by a local carpenter for £30. My brother would have done his own but I am a weak and feeble girl
    Lol
