Anyone live near (ish) to a Crematorium

We're currently purchasing a house and hopefully getting near to exchanging contracts.

Just yesterday it was announced that a firm had approval to build a crematorium up the road from us (same road).

At first I didn't think I was bothered as it is (according to Google earth) 900m away from us and we defininately can't see it from our house, but it will increase traffic along our road. It's in a rural area so it's not like it's just another building amongst many.

After a little bit of digging around I realise that there was quite a large campaign by local residents against this and I think it's this that is concerning me.

Anyone live near(ish) to a crematorium that can offer their experience?

Thanks

I'd swap the increase of traffic along the road for the guarantee that the site will stay as a very green site for the foreseeable future.

The road to our crem never seems busy and people are usually driving slowly and thoughtfully because of where they are going.

If the council has that land ear-marked for development, you could have ended up with an industrial site.
  • Thanks for your reply.

The site is actually on the outskirts of an industrial zone which I suspect will gradually get closer to me, though that never really bothered me.

Because of the aspect of the house we will never be able to see the opposite side of the road anyway (it has a 10ft listed castle wall running along our boundary).

I think I'm just having last minute panics over anything local at the moment! :)

Our local crem has nowhere near enough parking which causes issues on surrounding roads with big funerals, especially if there are a few close together.

Hopefully as yours is a new crem then parking will be better planned for, although it's worth asking to see the plans.

At least, other than increased traffic during the day, it won't be a noisy development, or be busy at night and weekends. And as above poster said, it will remain green.

Apparently I live 400m from one, I say apparently because I had to look up if there was actually a crematorium in the cemetery nearby.

I can just about see the tower of the chapel if I stand and tiptoes and look between two houses.

So no impact, intrusion or even awareness of the one near me.
  • We live around 200m from a working cemetary (not a crematorium). It is a semi-rural location and the cemetary doesn't have it's own parking. We only occasionally get issues with traffic when there is a large funeral. However, I only notice this during the day as I work from home and it's literally been a handful of times in the last 8 years.
  • Thanks to everyone that replied.

In about 1965 imported into Britain from the US were several Ford Galaxie Thomas Startin hearses. These had the same highly tuned 7 litre V8 engine as that used by the saloon car racing Galaxies.

900m away is a considerable distance. I imagine a lot of people live within that distance of a crematorium. As an earlier poster commented you are likely to be unaware of it.

I think this is an aspect of the am I doing the right thing wobbles many of us have when buying a house.
  • Thanks, I drove past it today and yes it is a considerable distance. I think if it was in a built up area I wouldn't consider it, but as it's quite rural it's almost my next door neighbour.

I have new worries today so yes just the wobbles

900m wouldn't bother me at all as it is a 10 minute walk away so you are not going to be effected by parking. I'm pretty sure most of us live within 1km of something unsavory. I have also realised from my own experience of living in a village that people will complain and protest adamantly about almost anything and with a lot of rumour/ inaccuracies. Nothing is quite like the NIMBY-ism of a village :D
