Unable to open web page on IE7 using Vista

While using IE7 I just noticed I couldn't click on links on the posts anymore. It would open blank pages. When I try to open a new web page I receive this pop-up and the webpage closes immediately

.......................... navcandfh5.jpg

effectively unable to open any new webpage nonethless able to work on existing opened webpage.

Fortunatley someone suggested downloading Firefox and I did so from one of the existing opened web page and there's no problem using firefox and using it at the moment

I'm comfortable with using IE7 though and would like this error fixed - googled a couple of techi forums to figure out a solution and it's all too complicated for me to understand what I'm supposed to do.

Anyone has had similar experience and got the issue solved or any suggestions on how to get IE7 fixed?

  • AHA!

    windows button + r

    then type in

    iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff

    Once in go to:

Tools > Options > Advanced > Phishing Filter and turn it off.

Its a bug in the new update for IE7.

Thank you - that's absolutely brilliant - it didn't work at the time but when I switched off and logged back the error seems to have disappeared and now my IE works just fine - I hope that pop-up never reappears.

Just one more question if it's ok to ask. How do I know when an update is installed - it has to ask me before installation isn't it? Because this problem occured last night so suddenly and I wasn't aware of any window updates. By the way I use Vista.
  • Depends what settings you have for windows update.

Lets say you have auto download and auto install switch on, and you leave your pc on while you go do something, it could be done then without your knowledge :)

Otherwise I'm not too sure about that one. All I know is that its a bug in a recent update.

In the control panel there will be windows update settings in the security center where you could tell it to auto download but not auto install etc.. but I would recommend you install them all anyway and just use firefox ;p

Thank You - I'll check on my settings - vista is quite new to me and I'm just getting used to it. The default settings seemed to suit me fine so far so I never bothered to do anything manually.

My only problem with Firefox is the scrolling seems tedious and it's blurred - with IE I can skim read whilst scrolling. Also the flash isn't working on Firefox - it asks me to download flash. I regularly watch YouTube music alongside surfing the net and all last night and until now when IE was fixed I've been missing it as Firefox doesn't let me view the YouTube - very strange I know.

O by the way turning off phishing filter whatever it's meant for wouldn't affect anything else I hope?
  • Hmmm well flash does work on firefox in vista.. so not sure what's going on there!

the phishing filter is built into IE and very buggy. Thats why I recommend firefox as your default browser. Then if you click on links via emails you know where you're going etc....

When you scroll (on IE), is it jerky? i.e instead of smooth, it scrolls about 1/5th of the page, stops then does it again a few times etc..

If so this suggests you need to install a graphics card driver :)
