Buying a car whilst cherish transfer still going through

Hi there,
I'm thinking of buying a new car if the deal stacks up however the car was on a private plate & the transfer back to original registration has been applied for but not yet complete.
The dealer has had an underwrite on my car but they want it sooner rather than later so he has said I could take the new car prior to the transfer being complete & he would then send off the V5 new keeper details as soon as he receives it. He'd put plates on it for the original reg it was reverting to.
I'm really confused as to how this can work in terms of tax & insurance, I understand a V5 isn't proof of ownership but I'm worried about being done for no tax or wrong insurance somehow?
Obviously I'd ring my insurance company to transfer my policy but is this even possible if the original reg hasn't yet been reassigned?
Similarly, with the changes to the tax system, will the car be taxed or untaxed?
Dealer says this happens often but obviously he has a vested interest so is bound to say that... I just don't really understand.
Any help most gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
Car is only 6 months old if that has any relevance?

If its still on the old plate you will need to get the tax sorted and possibly costs to change the plate with your insurer.
I would wait until he has the V5C with the correct reg number on it. I wouldnt want to contact my insurance to swap the details and maybe pay a fee.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Yeah it just doesn't seem possible to do what the dealer is suggesting particular since the change in tax rules.
They have sent off for the new V5, but are waiting for it to be returned from DVLA. Dealer is suggesting putting the original plates back on and taking it away, with me using those original plates to advise insurer.
I imagine though the vehicle can't be taxed until the DVLA have completed the transfer as when you enter the original reg it won't show up a vehicle currently, if that makes sense?
Thanks for your reply.0
