bay parking would be far easier than paralell parking I would have thought. then again they might train you to check your blind spot 10 times while doing the manouvere which would catch you out.

I'm guessing if you use your wing mirror to line up the car to the painted line/check your distance between the cars next to you while reversing that would be a major fail.

    Why would that fail?

So long as you end up completely within the bay, and do it safely with appropriate observations, the examiner doesn't care what techniques you use.

Spot on, the alleged professionals are largely untrained and make it up themselves, but charge money to give lessons, very few if any driving instructors have actually had lessons themselves, they just have to pass a simple exam, do an assessed drive and assessed lesson and then off into the big wide world.

That displays an astonishing level of ignorance.

To qualify as an ADI it is necessary to PASS tests of driving and instruction ability, not just "do" an assessment. Even with many hours of professional training the pass rates for these tests are very low. I doubt if any "largely untrained" individual could ever qualify.

After qualification, ADIs are re-tested on a regular basis.

There are, however, some instructors operating quite legally (albeit for a limited period) on a trainee licence, who haven't passed the final test. But that is a whole different kettle of fish, and even there it is a condition of their licence that they must have undergone a certain amount of training.

Whatever system you use to get the car into the gap is fine, as long as whilst you use your system, you have good control and have effective all round observation, such as when the front swings out, check nothing is coming etc. ;)

The first 2 exams aren't too bad, 100 question theory (not less than 20 out of 25 in each section) then hour long driving test only allowed 6 minors, but the third is tough when their eyes go glazed like they know nothing, but you know they know more than you ever will. Even worse when you have the chief supervising examiner testing them whilst you're on test....
If you haven't done it you can't appreciate how hard it can be.

Im guessing when you're reversing into the bay, each time you stop to realign your steering, you have to look at your blind spots, literally do a 360 look all around before proceeding to move 2 ft. then realign steering, do another 360 before proceeding 2 more fts.

If you forget to do a 360 look around, you fail. :D

When I trained to be an ADI in 2002 approx 70% of our intake didn't make it , many fell by the wayside in the early stages ( I dont believe they were suitable , but the driving school was a business taking their money) .
The ones that got through to part 3 had the hardest test as outline by previous posters and although I was an experienced driver I put many hours of practice in to qualify .

"Stopping to realign steering"? If Sian hadn't been able to slot into a bay or parallel space in one go I wouldn't have dreamed of booking her test!

You may need to stop just for obs in some situations but if people are passing tests at a stage where they can't reverse and steer at the same time there's something very wrong!!!

    Why ever not?

I am an instructor, and we teach people to do exactly that. Indeed, the official advice from the DVSA is "Avoid steering while the vehicle is stationary" to avoid damage to the tyres and steering mechanism.

None of this is a mystery: you just need to read "Driving - the Essential Skills" from the DVSA.

I can't believe you were taught to dry steer.

I was taught to reverse round a corner, that involves steering does it not?

I'd love you to suggest how it's done without turning the wheel.

Time to break out the popcorn. LT is on a roll.:rotfl:
