Just wanted to give an update on this. My insurance company have accepted it was a technical problem their end, and resolved this with the police (so I won't have the points or fine). Also got a call this afternoon to say the money to get my car released is going to be refunded to me in next 7-10 days. wanted to post this in case it's any help to anyone who has something similar happen. thanks to everyone who gave advice x

Great news, but by deleting the thread you've prevented anyone in the same position as you who googles their problem discovering the answer

    Hi,

Please could someone provide any advice or help with the following?

last year I was insured with M&S insurance. got a renewal letter through saying 'your insurance runs out on 17 Oct, we'll automatically renew it for you', letter goes on to say I don't need to do anything etc. I didn't contact them, assumed my insurance was in place.

Today I got pulled over by the police who told me I have no insurance. my car got towed and I've had to pay £150 to get it back. police have told me to expect a letter through the post with £300 fine and 6 points on my licence. I showed the police my renewal letter, who told me to take it up with my insurance.

we've spoken to M&S who don't know why the insurance wasn't carried forward, they will get back to us. still waiting to hear from them. they have passed it to their police liaison dept.

I've spoken to the ombudsman who are writing to them on my behalf. just in limbo, absolutely panicking about the fines and points. I'm off on maternity leave and had to borrow the money to get the car out (can crush cars if not collected within 7 days).

has anyone had any experience of anything similar? i'm not sure where to turn to for advice, the ombudsman couldn't offer much advice but to wait and hear back.

am I likely to be stuck with the fines and points. I know I should have picked up on the direct debit not coming out but I don't regularly check these assuming they just go out.

any advice would be gratefully received
    Thanks!!!!!!!
