anti wind turbines

i've just had a leaflet thru the door from people setting up a group to fight against some wind turbines on the essex / suffolk border
i presume these people would be happy to have a nuclear reactor on their doorstep instead

IMO it is perfectly reasonable for people to apply NIMBY, to both of the alternatives, you suggest if they feel it will have affect them adversely.

Just about everyone does it for all sorts of projects - hospitals, airfields, phone masts, supermarkets, etc.

nickj this does my nut. A friend of mine always goes on about how "ugly" they look... mind you ive never once seen her look at a power station and say how "pretty" it was. IMO a wind turbine is much much nicer than a power station!

    What is the alternative?

Yes everyone (i hope) is trying to use less, but our country is still growing and requires more power.

Until we get nuclear fusion a commercial scale there will have to be these trade off's.

    Nuclear fusion.
    Happy chappy
  • I'd prefer more Nuclear power than wind turbines. It is safe and proven. It can be used whilst other clean energy sources are developed and built

i read an interesting article in one of the saturday papers a month or so ago, think it was the guardian, about the wind turbine issue. it was a very balanced article and presented both sides - one family were in the shadow of a wind turbine and hence the light flickered constantly, it caused them to have headaches, another said they could feel the vibrations which made life unbearable, because of the turbine they found themselves unable to sell their houses to move away. For these people, the wind turbines had literally ruined their lives. Of course all the plus points too, ecological, and economical - they can be very lucrative for the people who had them on their land. Is it reasonable to ruin a few families' lives to have cleaner/greener energy? I don't know. There was also a very sad story about someone who had been strongly on one side of the argument while his brothers were on the other, he had tragically died, there were some whisperings of foul play. It is definitely the kind of thing that can rip communities apart.

One interesting point the journalist made was that it isn't actually necessary to put wind turbines near the coast, eg in Germany they are all over the place, and that perhaps the Govt only puts the turbines by the coast here because they perceive these as rural areas which are less likely to kick up a well-organised fuss.

Anyway might be worth a read of both sides' information. Initially I thought wind energy was a win-win situation but after reading this article it was clear that to the people involved it is something very important to them and worthy of taking a deeper look at all the issues involved.
