If I have two vehicles, a and b, and I earn a NCD on vehicle A, can I then use it when vehicle B is due for renewal as long as it hasn't been used on vehicle a?

Yes, it can only be used on one policy at a time but it isnt locked to a vehicle. You cant keep part years NCD so if you are dumping vehicle A mid policy year you'd need to transfer the remainder of the policy onto B (if the insurer allows) or lose the part NCD you've earned and start a new policy on B with any full years you've earned on A0 -
Ok, what's happened is:
Vehicle A was renewed in Dec minus NC because there was an active claim.
Claim was settled today in hubby's favour, and NC certificate was issued.
However as he has already paid for his insurance, he wants to use NCD when he renews his car insurance in April as he will have lost his NCB on his car this year.
Would that be ok? Timescales etc?0 -
Is it just me but I hate all this Veh A and something that maybe B...
Whose name is the no claims in? Who was the policy holder? He took out
insurance in December yet the renewal is April?
Is one of the vehicles sitting there uninsured? If you have a vehicle with your own no claims why would you want to use your husbands?
Surely he maybe better off passing the no claims onto his new insurer saying the incident has been sorted and no claims re-instated.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Assuming he has stayed with the same insurer then normally when the NCD is reinstated post settlement of the claim it is reapplied to the existing policy either generating a refund if you paid annually or a reduction in future payments if you pay monthly.
If for whatever reason that isnt the case then yes the NCD could be used on the other vehicle when its renewed as long as that vehicle is also insured in his name. Just ensure that owner/ keeper/ main driver etc are all correctly declared if its currently insured in your name rather than his.
This would be in replace of whatever NCD is currently on the other vehicle rather than addition. In theory when the original car renews in December again you could use the spare NCD from vehicle B on it as long as the policyholder names match etc - ie effectively switch the NCD across the two vehicles0 -

We're talking about two separate vehicles insured under two separate insurance policies.
The one for renewal in April was obviously taken out last April, the one in December was taken out the December previously on the other vehicle.0 -
My husband has two vehicles. A is his van, B is his car. Both are insured solely in his name. I don't drive. The van is a company van which is insured with a commercial policy, but in his name.
The car is owned by him, he is the reg'd keeper. He is the only person insured on both vehicles.
His van insurance was with one company but when renewal time came he jumped ship as they were useless.
Unfortunately, the new van insurers say that as the policy was taken out with 0 years NCD, they will not be altering that now, and if they did they would not readjust the policy price and would charge him for the pleasure.
However, the car which is insured elsewhere will not be getting any no claims this year due to a claim, so he figured if he could, he would use the NCD from his van at renewal for the car.0 -
The fact its a van/ commercial vehicle may make a difference
Whilst a fair percentage of car insurers will allow you to transfer your van insurance NCD to them almost no van insurer will allow you to transfer your personal Car NCD to them.
It therefore may be possible to do what he wants but it will then become stuck as a personal NCD. Depending on the relative premiums of the two vehicles it may be best to leave it on the commercial vehicle and just use it next year when the van renews0 -
Thanks for that.
Having just had a little investigate, I can see that my husband's policy wouldn't accept commercial NCD at all.
I have, however, managed to find a fab quote through a different insurer who will accept it, so we will see what renewal time brings.0 -

That makes a lot more sense. Sadly as above moving from a trade/commercial policy to a private one maybe impossible.
My mate transferred his full no claims to a trade policy, Made no claims but found they would not transfer it back to a private policy.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
