New boiler fan

Hi all

I posted this elsewhere before i came across this section of the forum.

Just been quote £515 + VAT to supply and fit a new fan for a Sabre 25 He Plus boiler. Labour £140 + £375 materials.

Does that seem a bit high???

Thanks!

You should be able to check the price of parts with the manufacturer or supplier. Labour seems about right depending where you are.

Look at British Gas, fixed prices including parts.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

That part can be bought for around £170 to £200. You need to get some more quotes. With labour you should be looking at £300 tops.
  • OK. I hope this thread serves to highlight the ambiguity/difficulty in repairing boilers but it turns out there was a much simpler solution.

So, we had 2 separate repair men come to try and fix it, neither of whom was 100% sure of the issue. The 1st said faulty fan, the 2nd said fan and flue. Cue me searching for fans on eBay, watching videos, examining British Gas's repair service and generally causing myself a hell of a lot of stress. One call to the manufacturer solved the situation - he told me how to RESET my boiler properly. I, and both repairmen, had all turned it off at the wall, then turned the dials off. This, apprently, does not reset it - in order to reset it, you must not turn it off at the wall at all but simply turn the dial to reset position.

What annoys me is that this was such a simple solution but the 1st repair man told me fitting a new fan would cost over £550 (inc VAT) and that i actually needed a new boiler for £1500. How many people must go through total agony through similar issues. I'm not saying every boiler can just be reset but I bet this, and other simple solutions would save a lot of money for a lot of people.

Just for the record, apparently my boiler isn't great but for now it works fine (Sabre HE 25 Plus).

Sorry officerlog but I had assumed that the fault had been diagnosed correctly. Its quite shocking that 2 "heating engineers" didn't know how to reset your boiler and even more shocking that that was all that was required.
At least your can cross 2 engineers off your list of people to call if it breaks down again.
I personally am not a fan of Sabre boilers and wouldn't install one. However, like I say to all my clients, all boilers are good as long as they're working (to a point).
If it goes again, find yourself a good, reliable engineer. I, and all the engineers I know and deal with, offer a no fix no fee service. I cant honestly see how anyone can charge for not repairing something.
Recommendations from friends, family, neighbours etc are the best way to go.
Glad you are up and running now though.
