You *might* just about be able to use overburning to fit that on to an 80min CD-R.

Apparently, 90 minute and 99 minute CDs exist now. Maybe that would be another alternative.
I'm going to go with eshul, try overburning first. But use the slowest write speed available to you, or you might not be able to achieve a good enough quality burn.

90 and 99 minute CDs have been around for a pretty long time. In fact I can't remember when I last had to use one. But they basically allow you to overburn upto around 90/99 minutes. When you try to overburn a normal 80 minute CD, you probably won't make it much further than 83 minutes.

So really the key is patience and good quality CD-Rs.
  • You could just re-encode the mp3 to make it a bit smaller

    that wouldn't work.
as hes burning it as an audio cd, which already converts it to a different format. So the bitrate of the original mp3 is irrelevant

althou i would try to burn the mp3 as a data cd and try it in the car, if its not a really old car stereo, it will probably work
  • cut off an audio track, cut off part of the track and fade the audio out

I would be tempted to just drop the least-favoured track from the listing.

Unfortunately, there are no separate tracks.

    It's one continuous recording.

    !!!LIGHTBULB!!!!

You can't change the bit rate but you can change the speed which the track plays at!

Not by much! A percent faster should bring the listening time below the 80 min mark for burning to an audio CD!!!

How to speed up a song using AUDACITY: http://youtu.be/zqaj4wJ0OWk

You just need to speed it up slightly to make sure it's below 80min mark. You should not notice the change.

DING! Speed it up by 3% and it'll fit!
  • Doh, didn't read it properly.

I wonder how much time is needed shaving off the CD? Maybe you could use Audacity to look for silent gaps that you could shorten? I have no idea what is the content of this CD, but if you used a combination of gap removal/shortening and speeding up small bits, you might be able to edit it shorter.

By the general tone of his answers it sounds to me like it's a audio book. (i.e. a single track ) so not much room to trim anything off of it!

OP still hasn't answered regarding the vehicle make/model and age ... there's a very reasonable chance the CD player will play MP3 files natively.

another option would be to cut the file in half and put it on 2 cd's. althou this would mean you need to change the cd half way through.

i still think checking if it can play mp3's is the best approach
