Windows not updating and computer slow..?

Recently my PC has been somewhat slower than previously and this has coincided with a period when Windows updates have started refusing to install.

Whenever I try to install, I keep getting the message 'updates were not configured correctly - reverting changes'. The first stage of configuration seems to be missing. When I look at the 'update history' for today's attempt (manual), I see that only 2 out of 15 updates were successful.

I don't know if it's relevant but I recall getting a windows message some time ago saying 'host process for windows services stopped working and was closed'. This appeared over a period of a couple of days at the beginning of the trouble but has not been seen since.

I have Vista basic running on a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop.

Can anyone shed any light? The situation is getting grim.

what checks/scans have you done for malware? start with malwarebytes and take it from there...

Back up your data in readiness for a clean install. Why waste time?
What is the machine's Service Tag?

Do you have a system restore point from before your troubles? If so, restore away.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I've run malwarebytes and avira free editions which have found nothing.

Can someone tell me how to check for 'system restore points'? I'm computer illiterate, sadly.

Did you try grumpycrab's suggestion at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/

Look for the Windows Vista Fix-It box (scroll down 1 page)
It claims to "Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update"
Just Click Run-now and follow the instructions.

To find restore points. Click on the start button then Control Panel.
Type "restore" into the search box (Top right)
Look for "restore your computer to an earlier time"
You will need to know the date the first problem occurred and find a restore point earlier than that.
It isn't always successful particularly if there have been a lot of system changes.
