Price notebooks

Hello

My OH's job isn't terribly stable and so I've decided to try to get a few bargains food wise that are shelf stable so if his job goes !!!!!!, we've got something to eat!

I've read a lot about notebooks where people keep a record of how much things usually cost them so they know instantly if something is a bargain. I was just wondering, how they're organised, how you record the price (just the price, price plus size, price per kilo, etc).

Any tips would be appreciated!

Keep your last grocery receipt and write the sizes down of the products.

For instance we buy packets of apricots, dates etc. If I'd have kept my last Tesco receipt our current bag is 500g so if I had have written this size next to the price I would know if another packet was better value or not.

Receipts are easy to carry with you, just keep them organised so you don't have 100's You only need the ones from the places you are likely to visit. So maybe 3 tops.

Edited to add, I didn't say I have often thought of doing it myself. So I might just do so now. I wonder if I could take advantage of Holland and Barret penny sale?

I saw this tip the other day- a way to index your notebooks. I'm waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it myself but it might be a way of organising your prices.

If you have a smart phone, download the free app called "My Supermarket". I have saved our usual items and our favourites on there as a list, so when they go on offer it notifies me and I can stock up when I am next passing.

It also (somewhat scarily) knows when you are near a particular supermarket and notifies you of the best offers that day!

It has saved me quite a lot of money so far.

I used to keep a cash book and put all my spending in it, but I've never heard of this method for keeping tracks on supermarket prices. I would probably use an index book sounds like a terrific idea.

So far i'm thinking of using an address book
eg
Under A~ Apples then price in asda, aldi, coop,etc

Don't know if it would work but a lack of suitable smart phone might just push me to try it.

And depending on how good your maths is price per 100 grammes or millilitres, the do the sums from there

The price per 100gm is on the shelf edge, you may have to juggle the decimal point around mentally because supermarkets assume we are all doughnuts and sometimes put price per kilogramme, assuming we cannot work it out

I am thinking of starting a price book too. The book 'The Tightwad Gazette' talks about this in detail. It's been a while since I read it but if I remember you can just set it up as an A4 binder or use any notebook that takes your fancy. I suppose a binder/polypockets would allow things to be changed around more easily when needed.

With most supermarkets having online options I would probably go in and get a selection of prices for each item from there as a start and then work with receipts for other shops.

You can have a page per item with price comparisons across supermarkets/local shops or you can set it up under shop name and then list item you usually buy.
