My bank unblocked my stolen debit card by accident

I'm a customer at Citibank and on New Year's Eve unfortunately my wallet with my debit card etc inside was stolen. I immediately called them up to block it and before they sent a new one out they said I would have to go into a branch with some ID which they needed for security purposes. I did this on Friday.

Today I called them on a completely different matter and also decided to enquire as to whether my new card had been sent out to me yet. Incredulously, I was told "oh no, we got your ID on Friday and we unblocked your old one so you can just use that again". They seemed to have no record that I had stated both over the phone and in the branch that my card had been stolen.

Thankfully no transactions appear to have gone through the account but do I have any recourse to compensation here? Seems like an unbelievably irresponsible thing to do.

Close your account and take your business elsewhere. That'll show them!

Oddly enough banks don't tend to 'compensate' customers when nothing has happened!
You are not out of pocket as you were calling them anyway, no payments have left your account and I take it the card is now blocked. At most expect £25 for the delay in getting a new card sent to you.

Unfortunately I travel a fair bit and they're the only bank that give me free EUR and USD accounts attached to the same debit card (unless there are any others I am not aware of?)

I've always understood that once a card has been blocked it can't be reversed. I suspect there's a misunderstanding in here somewhere.

You could send them a formal demand:

    Sir,

The phone call I had with one of your representatives on the 5th of January 2015 was extremely distressing and I fear I will be permanently traumatised.
I therefore hereby demand 25p as refund for the cost of the call and £300,000 as compensation for the psychological prejudice.

    Yours,

    campbeco, Esq.

They'll probably come back offering to settle for £10k-20k but I would hold on and not accept anything below £100,000.
