Reclaim double contactless payments?

Hey, please let me know if this is in the wrong section and I'll post it elsewhere.

Last week I paid for a meal with a contactless card, and the person taking the payment looked a bit confused and tapped my card twice saying the first time hadn't worked. Of course a few days later when I check my statement I see the payment was charged to my card twice. It was actually a debit card rather than a credit card, but I'm wondering if I have any way of getting the second payment refunded and how to go about doing this? Would the procedure be any different if it was a credit card as opposed to a debit one?

Many thanks in advance!

I think the procedure is and always was the same for debit and credit cards.
You call the card provider and report the unauthorised transaction.

However, if both the retailer and the provider insist that it was authorised, I think you'll struggle to prove them wrong. That's why personally I, like many other people, never make contactless payments.
  • If true, as a first time poster, your immediate call would not be a forum to hear 'views', but the card company itself !

Why the need for a thread for such a simple mistake....Oh I know, T !!! The C/card company would immediately see this a duplicate transaction when pointed out to them. One would get cancelled. SIMPLE !

You don't have to prove you wrong, they have to prove you wrong.

you could also go back to the restaurant and tell them. They may just refund the 2nd one.

So, can I simply keep calling and claiming all contactless payments back as it's impossible to prove anything?

    Of course it's not impossible.
Transactions have times, dates and locations.

If you "keep" calling then you'll risk a prosecution for fraud which is a criminal offence. Contactless only works for small amounts which for most sound minded people are not going to provide motivation to commit a criminal offence.

Two transactions very close together for the same amount is pretty easy to determine.

I certainly wouldn't let anyone else tap my card.

Well, this could easily be two genuine transactions. Next time I'll pay for myself and for my friend, then will claim that it was a duplicate transaction.

    Just playing the devil's advocate...

Then they'll have two receipts displaying a transaction time a suitable length of time apart. Two transactions for the same thing going through within seconds is incredibly unlikely. Though as is a till taking payment twice for the same thing - I would have assumed one of them is just a hold, but that wouldn't show up on their statement.

What's "suitable"? What if it's, say, bus or cinema tickets?

As I said above, I never make contactless payments and don't know where they can be made, but I think that it's places where the time gap between genuine payments can normally be very small.

When I pay for my friend, I'll do my best to make the gap as small as possible ;)
