Please can anyone give me some ideas as to the best way to keep receipts. I can never find one when I want one. It's not for tax returns etc it's just so I can keep them in some sort of order but don't kn the best way. Thanks!

When I kept receipts for my tax return I would use those punched pockets and get 12 of them and mark them up from January through to December. I would put the receipts in the pocket for the correct month and that way it would keep them together. These days I keep receipts for large items (furniture etc) in a file that already has divided pockets in it. The shopping receipts and petrol receipts go into my January to December punched pockets and then I clear them out at the end of the year.0

For normal shopping receipts, I put them all in a small zipped purse in my handbag, then at the end of the month, tot them up, then get rid, ready for the new month.Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

Photo them with smartphone file in Evernote all free!!0

Plenty food for thought here, my mind always wants to go for complicated (and usually expensive) ideas.

It depends why you need them. Filing in date order is fine if you are just keeping them for a year and then chucking them.
But if you need to find one for a particular reason (eg to get a store refund) then you might struggle if you can't remember when you bought it. However, you might be more likely to remember where you bought it - so file in alphabetical order instead. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Front pocket of the filing cabinet and then every few months in to a carrier bag and put under my bed. Every year, throw a few of the carriers out. Usually end up keeping them until they're about 2 yrs old 'just in case'.0

Food shop receipts - pinned to my noticeboard until the following month.
Clothing etc and items I may want to take back are pinned separately to the same board. Once I know the item is satisfactory and the money has come out of the bank I either shred or put with the guarantees.
Guarantee-type receipts go into a box file with instruction books and are culled yearly.0 -
Food shopping - if I've paid by card, enter the amount on my accounts spreadsheet, keep the receipt with all my other card receipts til I pay the card off (which I do in full each month) then shred.
If I've paid cash, enter on spreadsheet as before, and shred.
Clothing/gadgetry/equipment purchases:
Ring file, plastic wallets, one per supplier, filed in alphabetical order.
So everything I've had from Amaz0n in one wallet, stuff from J0hn L3wis in another, and so on. Weed annually and shred any that are no longer needed. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0
