The starter motor takes power from the battery which needs recharging. Charging the battery takes power from the engine to drive the alternator.

I setup a rig some years back. 350w? electric drill driving an alternator via a belt.
Start the drill at a decent speed and add a load one 55w headlamp bulb. The drill stopped instantly. Not enough power to drive the alternator to provide a 55 watt load approx 4.6 amps.

Starter may take several hundred amps, OK only for a second or so but do that 20 or 30 times in heavy traffic.

I think that you are most probably right. I did rather better during the 12 months when the Start-Stop was broken. I have switched it off by way of experiment.

Many stop start systems don't used the starter motor to restart. Starter motor is only used for initial starting using the key.
