Post Office Savings Stamps?

Not sure if this is in the right area, but hopefully someone can help.
I've been using Post Office savings stamps for a while. You have to pay cash £5 per stamp, they give you a card to collect them on and you can use them for bills and the like.
My question is - saving for Christmas. The post office say the savings stamps are idea for christmas savings, however you cannot redeem them for cash. You can, according to them, use them for any service that the Post Office provides. Now I would like to know, does a Postal Order count as a service, or does it count as cash? I would think it's a service as you have to pay for them, and that way you could save your stamps and then get a postal order a few weeks or so before you need it, and deposit it in your bank and use the cash for shopping.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But I'd be interested to know if I can do that, if so I'll start saving them for the christmas expenses.
Thanks
Laura
Oh - I know I could just put the money in a savings account, but with savings stamps I'm not going to dip into the cash at the end of the month when I'm short!

Not sure if postal orders are a service or not, but please remember that they do not cost the same as their face value - the post office makes a charge when you buy them.
I'm sorry but I don't know what the charges are, but I think you should check this out first.
Personally, I'd use a savings account....Mortgage Free in Three - number 94
