Just scan one item from 6 bags of shopping. 43p for a weeks shopping. :D They'd soon find a member of staff to scan everything for you.
Can't see this working- I am way to transparent and rubbish at lying! I found an honest glitch yesterday in Waitrose (the multi-buy still worked despite the discount which I had forgotten happens) and I was shaking so violently that the lady behind me asked me if I needed to sit down and if I was diabetic! (I am not diabetic, I was just really worried I'd done something illegal and would get told off which despite most of the staff being almost half my age!) Can you imagine what would happen if I tried to get away with 6 bags of stuff :rotfl:I'd land myself decapitated the other side of the planet!

I think you may be referring to self service checkouts rather than scan & shop?

Oh I see! *penny drops* I was wondering why I'd never seen this happen before!

I've seen these shop and scan things, never used them, I hate the scanning barcode thing and also like the idea that I don't have the responsibility of remembering to scan; brain like a sieve and regularly involved in the rugby tackle that is the reduced section, the shop and scan tool would be an instant way to get myself a personal shopper it would seem!

My sister likes using these whenever I've taken her to mr Ts. I don't have a club card so I don't use it anyway but even if I did I honestly don't think I'd use it because I know what I'm like I get distracted, even when I was with her helping I got distracted!

I dislike those scanning machines as I like to think that by using the ordinary till I am keeping someone in a job.
What will be the next idea that we r-stock the shelves for the SM's to save them even more wages No I like a human being to take my cash and feel daft talking to a blooming machine anyway. I'm slightly deaf so I can only hear the horrible voice moaning about 'Unexpected item warning ' I feel like yelling Yes its me a customer Grrr...

Just another ploy to reduce costs by getting the customer to the checkout persons job.
The only thing that is constant is change.

Just got home from the weekly shop, which has latterly taken the form of the scan-as-you-shop facility in Tesco. I love it - everything gets packed in the right bag as you go along, and at the end you just pay and you're on your way.

Having said that, I do worry about absentmindedly forgetting to scan something, so I am forever scrolling up and down on the scanner, checking that everything is there.

EVEN SO, today as I was chosen for a 'random service check' as they call it, it turned out that one item had not been scanned - a £1 bag of crisps! No idea how it happened - I must have got sidetracked looking for the next item on my list. I am sitting here munching from the offending object as I type. :) The attendant was very nice about it and said not to worry, "these things happen", but I still feel terrible that she might think I had tried to steal it. She also said that my next couple of shops might be routinely scanned as there had been 'a problem' on this occasion. Dare I ever use the wretched thing again?? Please tell me this has happened to more of you?!
I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest. The last time I did a scan and shop I foolishly let my Husband scan the stuff, and paid for 2 items twice which I didn't buy! Didn't notice until I got home. So it works the other way too! x
  • Thank you so much everyone - it is good to know I have so many 'partners in crime'! :) I also take on board what some of you have pointed out - that scanning your shop yourself would put jobs in danger if we all did it. Food for thought indeed. Thank you again for everyone's perspective - I love the MSE forums, you are a great bunch!

    Best wishes from Annie x

I won't use these as, like Jackie O, I think that I'm taking somebody's job. Now I have another reason not to use them - I have a brain like a sieve.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.
  • I use the scan and shop every week. It's awesome. It helps me keep to my tight budget because I know exactly how much I'm spending and it tells me if there are offers on the things I normally buy.
Fabulous gadget, and a real money saving help.

I'm a big fan too - it really makes you think twice about just chucking stuff in the trolley when you can see it adding up. I've only had a 'random' check once and thankfully everything was fine, it was a real hassle though unpacking everything.
