How to pay a builder?

Hello.
We are in the process of getting someone in to renovate our bathroom. It will take around 7 days to complete. We are paying for materials.
Now what's the standard practice of payment?
Thanks
Richard

There isn't really a standard practice, preferred methods will vary between individuals/companies.
Personally on a 7 day job I'd just take full payment upon completion but it can be common for some to take x amount on first day ( 10/20% maybe ) with rest on completion.
You'd just be best to ask the tradesmen himself, but if nothings been discussed regarding payment and no contract from the tradesmen then considering you're supplying materials I would assume payment upon completion.0 -
Thanks.
Does the builder draw up the contract or is that up to you? How detailed does it have to be?0 -
If there's any sort of contract or agreement the builder would have it, but there isn't specifically a need for one , just some may use one to protect themselves and outline costs and guarantees etc.
If you are asked for an amount prior to work commencing or on first day etc, then to help protect yourself you could ask for the payment dates and amounts in writing so there's no surprises.0 -
You should have some sort of written quote. I paid a deposit by cheque of I think 10%
I then got an invoice when complete.
I paid mine after the job, by direct bank transfer. Prior to making the £x,000 payment I made a test payment of £1 and confirmed with him that it had arrived.0
