HP Printer constantly going offline

I know I'm not alone with this problem as I've seen many similar complaints across the internet but I've yet to find a workable solution. I wonder if anyone here might be able to help?
To use my printer I have to disable my router security, leaving it wide open to anyone to access my network. As soon as I re-enable the security the printer goes into offline mode. I've tried assigning a static IP address well outside the usual DCHP range and this worked for a while but stopped again.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next as I need to use my printer daily but keep disabling/enabling security is having a knock on effect on other devices on the network and stopping them from working.

What "router security" are you talking about? And it would help immensely to tell us what HP printer you have.0 -

Did you do that just on the router or did you do it on the printer ?0 -
