Good budget NAS

I am after a good budget NAS if thats at all possible. I only have about 1TB max of files with music and films. Just need something thats not to slow and won't regret in the long run. I was actually looking at the WD MyCloud storage NAS but reading a lot of mixed reviews. Don't really want to spend more than 200 pounds. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

  • dlink dns320l , buy it bear , add WD red drives when you can afford them , 1 drive or 2 , normal or as raid.

I have one here , with 2 x 2t WD reds raided , its got a built in clock (cpu) to turn it off at night , then back on,

dive(s) are easy to map in windoz ,

start with an old drive , then improve later.

I stream films on the nas to my tv via a sumvision micro 4 , flawlessly , and add / delete them via the network

Some routers have a USB port and can share a connected drive. Worth checking your router as USB hard drives tend to be cheaper than those units with the networking gear.

I don't believe my router has a USB port.
  • if it has it will be bloody slow!

    dns320l , with a talk talk router (1ooom) cat 6 cables , 60-70 meg out , 25-35 in , works for me

    Why do you say that?

My Asus RT-AC68U won't match a dedicated NAS but it manages 14 MB/s which isn't too shabby.

    14mb/s is a LOT slower than 65/75MB/S

I "was" getting speeds not much faster with my nas , until I changed from a 10/100 card to a gigabite card , a new (free) router and cat 6 cables

the price of a Asus RT-AC68U , and a USB caddy is getting close to a nas drive.

copying 500g of files via the usb (yours) would take a full day compered to a network drive.

however if you are happy doing this , that's ok.

the original poster asked for a affordable "NAS" , not a cheapskate cheap way of copying files to a drive (usb caddies are only £15 on amazon)

Indeed it would be expensive to go out and buy such a router, I was suggesting it would be worth the OP seeing if their current router already had the option. 500GB at 14MB/s would take 10 hours. You will only get the kind of speeds you are seeing with cables, gig network card and gig switch or router which the OP may or may not have (could be wireless). A NAS in the region of £100-200 is unlikely to exceed 50MB/s simply because of the low powered SOC which controls them.

I actually have a WD MyBookLive but that has been superseded by the WD MyCloud. Personally I don't trust NAS drives with cloud features as the vendor rarely has then properly secure and responds with patches in a timely fashion when issues are reported. That said you can always just firewall them off from the outside world, as I have done.

I've also got a Time Capsule; I think you have to install software on Windows to use it.
