you can get them from some of the bigger B&Q stores wickes travis perkins or just about any builders merchant around the country

a five tone cover should be around the £20.00 mark
  • Is it an imperial measurement one? If so, I would be interested to know where to get one. We have looked at the above places and similar but they only do metric sizes which don't fit.

It's not as simple as replacing the cover, unless you can find the same manufacturer and cover type, you normally have to replace the whole lot, most covers are supplied with a new frame which not only fits, but seals correctly.

What does it cover? Are you sure it's your responsibility to replace it?

Would it not be the council's responsibility?

It may not be your responsibility if it is deemed a "lateral drain" following the introduction of new rules a few years ago. So it would be worth checking this out.

If is your responsibility then consider the loading that the cover will take. Many sold in DIY stores, and on line, are poor quality and only suitable for pedestrian use - even a loaded wheelbarrow will cause them to buckle. The bigger the cover the more likely this will be. Even the picture posted on this thread may be suspect. If it does not buckle the galvanised finish may be suspect.
  • Specific question on manhole covers re what weight they can take. What different "weights" of manhole cover are available? I presume they go in grades like 5 ton, 10 ton, 15 ton or the like? and what does that equate to in terms of what can go over it and not damage it (ie person/car/small lorry/mega-size lorry/etc)?
