I used to work for a company that made M&S knickers, I used to browse the store looking at them saying to the wife "I packed these" lol.

The walking out will have been the bit that made you look like a perv, perhaps you should have asked the assistants if they had any your size :)

Maybe staff as so au fait with nervous male buyers, they find they have to ask twice before the male of the species has the confidence to reply? I can see three times was too much

Why haven't you bothered to apply this technique to your KFC issue?

Yes, Sqem, why haven't you done this?

Referring to sales assistants as 'retail monkeys' is just plain rude.

As for the OP's vent, I'd have done this:

Just a simple I'm fine would suffice and then when the 2nd/3rd come up just say oh yes your colleague just asked and I'm fine.

That would have made them realise that you seriously needed no help.

But I guess the upside is that you now realise you can maybe get the brand your wife likes in the sales sometimes.

If you are buying them, then it going to be more a case of what you want to see her in, rather than what she likes!!
Granted, there's no point if she won't were them, or insist on taking them back.
But it's something to work on over time ...
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard

When it comes to buying lingerie for a significant other, I'm afraid some of us are just pants.

I appreciate they were probably annoying, but just be brief with them and offer a quick no. There's no need to make a thong and dance over it.

Generally these assistants are known as "floor walkers" and have to be seen approaching every customer who walks through the door.
It will be a target laid down by area managers who are trying to push sales.

Out of 5 people 4 will say no thanks 1 will say "yes please help me, I am looking for xyz" and end up being upsold. Its just a sales target thing and nothing to do with the assistant, who probably hates having to ask you!

To all those who post comps, no wins yet though!

I get that bit... A polite "No thanks, I know what I'm looking for" is the response.

I think walking out seems OTT.

I was the only customer in a small retail unit. The 2nd was probably in earshot of the first exchange, but got the same answer and then gave me all of 90 seconds before pestering me again.

So clearly they are not taking notice of what the customer is saying - which means I'll take my money elsewhere.

(Which turned out to be a better deal anyway!)
I need to think of something new here...
