From my understanding it gets very bitter and less effective after two or three uses.
You could try and see if you notice a difference, it could be that its something some are more sensitive to than others.
Personally I buy the sm own brand natural yogurt. 500ml @ 50ish p does around 5 batches with a carton of UHT
Thank you, I guessed their must be a reason that people said they did other ways.
I may continue to buy the sachets then, £1.60 its not so bad. Otherwise I would have to start getting organised & find them space in the freezer & then remember to take out & defrost when I wanted to use....0 -

Lots to read Kim, but making your own this way is only 30p a litre. I make up 6 small pots per week (total 1 litre). Why pay more.0 -
I keep reusing a starter from my previous batch, have done so for at least the last 5 or 6 batches and I still get decent and not too sour yogurt.
I used Yeo Valley as starter and use fresh organic milk from the SM.
Once I tried to use raw milk but the yogurt did not come out well, very liquid and the fat separated from the rest. However I drained it in muslin and it made an amazing cream cheese! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Super Market.
I use powdered milk, Kim, £1.15 per 400g's same price Tesco and Sainsbury.Makes 4 litres.
Avoid Marvel, way too expensive.
Went off liquid milk about 10 years ago, saving, at todays price difference,
and my usage about £100 per year0 -
Just been reading this very interesting thread as finding making my own yogurt is getting expensive and it's almost cheaper to buy ready made. If I use supermarket powdered skimmed milk will I have to boil it first as I know you can only use UHT and not sure if the powdered stuff will be UHT. Thanks0
