Personally meeting your solicitor

Hi all,
Quick question (perhaps)
We're buying a shared ownership house so found a solicitor that specialised in this.
Will we have to meet face to face at some point? I hadn't thought of this when we we asking about quotes and their services.
We're approximately 2.5hrs drive away.
Is this likely to be a problem?

I have never met with any of my solicitors when buying/selling property. (My current solicitor quotes his charges at £250 per hour, so I don't particularly want to pay his fees for a meeting.)
A lot of communication can be done by email (or phone). Where original signatures are required, just send docs by first class post.0 -
I didn't ever meet my solicitor during my purchase. Although I did already know him, so it didn't seem weird in any way just to chat to him on the phone/email.
He would often send me documents to sign which I could fax/scan and email back, for speed, and then post back as well - so he had the 'real' copy on record.
It was a lot cheaper using a solicitor in a small Devon town than one actually in London!Mortgage - £[STRIKE]68,000 may 2014[/STRIKE] 45,680.0 -
We got ours through Nationwide and they were based in Leicester I think (we're in London). Never met them but we were constantly in touch by phone especially towards the end of the transaction.0

It can be useful to be able to meet, though not essential.
If you need fast turn-around of documents, you can collect/deliver to/from their office same day. Or drop in to sign.
If there's something you don't understand, a face to face can make explanation easier.
And if you have a problem/complaint, being able to go in personally to discuss (or even make a fuss!) is useful.
As for edddy's £250 per hour comment, provided your contract them with them is a fixed fee quote rather than an hourly rate, it is not an issue unless something extraordinary/unforeseeable comes up in the conveyancing for with they might charge extra.
But not for a visit as above.0 -
Far easier to deal with people face to face. Ask questions etc in one sitting.0
