As in the Profumo affair "they would say that wouldn't they?" :rotfl:

They seemed to be happily posting about new people being appointed to the practice though :(

Some people want it both ways

sorry just dont belive a small firm would have some outsider updating their page and running comps
    What goes around-comes around
  • lots of small firms do use PR agencies, mainly because they don't have the staff/skill/time/money to either employ someone directly or use in house staff.

not sure it's true in this case, as this is so unprofessional and contrary to ASA standards, competition law, etc. I have met some poorly trained/experienced freelance PRs over the years, but this is so obviously wrong and poor judgment.

very glad that they have had their pages taken down though, because it has been handled so badly.

Can definitely confirm that small business' do employ agencies to handle their social media, I used to work in an agency that had a department specifically for this. Also to post blog posts on their behalf, write their emails etc.

You'll usually offer them a deal where you will say you'll do 4 posts a week and charge them £100 a month or something (or 10 posts a week and charge them £250 a month for example). To the business it's not a huge outlay and it gives them a social media presence that they, perhaps, wouldn't know how to do effectively themselves, so they pay a small fee for "experts" to do it for them. It's not hard to do, the hard part is signing up the business' to it and getting enough signed up to cover the bills / wages etc)

If that's the case in this scenario the agency has possibly setup a followers target so they will offer the business, for example, to get over 1000 likes on their page for say £500. (Big business these days, there's "sweatshops" in India that hire people to setup Facebook accounts and "Like" pages. You just tell them you want 20,000 likes and they'll get to it)

It happens all the time ... so much so it was part of the guys business plan that won the Apprentice this year (SEO and social marketing, presumably though he'll do it legitimately).

As already posted the original Pure Dentistry FB page is no longer there, but they have now got themselves a new FB page and are now offering a Free Scale and Polish once they receive 100 likes. They currently have 3 likes and as djc58 wrote, that's 3 too many! Waiting for ASA to come back to me with the results of their investigation into the competition and the way it was run
