Yet another cat food question thread

Options
I started posting this on another thread, but I don't know how you guys feel about thread derailment. I've a small question (well two really) - It's something I'm mithering about, so hopefully no one will mind?

Background - I've three fuzzies - two queens @ 18 and 10 months (fixed), and a 10 month tom (not fixed as he's got no issues and no pregnancy risks). All indoor cats, never been out (not through choice, but a spate of poisonings in the area right after I got them).

I'm feeding Porta 21 FF grain free on demand and 1 tin/carton of either Butchers classic or Bozita grain free in the evening. Lots of water bowls.

They also have the wing tips and skin off any chickens, trimmings from any pork or beef joints, and fish heads and tails/the odd prawn on occasion (averages something once a week) - fish cooked, the rest raw.

Healthy weights (around 4kilos), good coats, active and [STRIKE]destructive[/STRIKE] playful.

Question - This sound about right?

No complaints, I'm just asking as I stock up from Zoo+ every Jan and wanted a second opinion before ordering 40odd kilos of something... I've also got about 900 zoo+ points and am considering 3x6 Cosma Glory trial packs.

Question the second - Think this is a good idea, or is there something else that would be better/value?

It's about 45% meat and looks grain free (some rice).

Chicken with Lobster: Chicken (40.3%), lobster (4.5%), rice (1.1%), potassium chloride (0.18%), stock (53.1%). Additives: Vitamin E (50mg/kg). Technological additives: Cassia gum (3150mg).

The alternative is 3x6 Greenwoods Adult Cat Food which is 75% tuna, but someone told me once to not feed cats too much tuna, not sure why.

Ingredients:75% tuna, 1% brown rice, 24% chicken stock

Thanks for the views.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

  • I don't really have an answer to your question, but I have 4 furballs and also buy from Zooplus.
I only leave them biscuits out to graze on during the day/night and always give them wet food at meal times because wet is better for them. We vary between Bozita, Grau Gourmet, Finecatz, Smilla, Animonda Vom Feinstein. I tend not to feed fish as I too have read that it's not so good for them and I think tuna contains mercury.
All the best with your investigation!

I personally don't feed any grain so i can't advise on grain containing wet foods.

Our female has a very small amount of biscuits for a treat in a treat ball etc as making this a meal would lead to dehydration.

She sometimes has butchers, she likes smilla, we partially raw feed. We only feed her proteins she could actually catch such as birds, rabbits and occasionally duck. We feed her raw chicken wings and legs, the odd rabbit and adult mice. We add taurine to her raw food along with plaque off.

I thought Porta was a complementary food so it should be considered a treat food, ahh is it the dry food you feed? I know the cosma glory is definitely a complementary food.

    We have tried
    Hilife
    Smilla
    Feringua
    Catz finefood
    Grau grain free
    Macs
    Granatapet
    Butchers orange tins

All were enjoyed, i always feed a variety of foods, i don't want them becoming reliant on a particular brand incase for some reason it stops becoming available.

    Thanks,

Yes, the porta 21 is dry, the butchers and Bozita are wet.

The Cosma Glory and Greenwoods are both wet and are what I'm considering with my reward points. It's either that or a new cat scratcher :p

Gwylim - I think the Porta, Butchers, Bozita, Cosma Glory and Greenwoods are all grain free?

I know butchers has a lowish meat content, but I only really feed it when I need something I can pickup at the supermarket.

I'm not placing the order yet, so am happy to be told if there's something I'm missing.

  • Just wondering why you need to do such a big order now?

You only need to spend £29 to qualify for free delivery so why not split into smaller orders - in case they go off something?

I'd also recommend Happy Kitty Company which stocks Granatapet, Macs and OmmNomNom ....

If you're doing a Zoo+ order, I'd probably stick in some Lily's Kitchen http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/lilys_kitchen_wet_cat_food - also grain free and Mia loves it! :)

Re your boy - personally I would aim to get him neutered ASAP. There's always a risk of escape :( and sadly with boys, he may start to spray - it's something much easier to prevent than sort once started.

Mostly because I'm lazy and my 5% discount pass runs out at the end of the month :).

I always place a large order of basics in Jan and then pick up anything that looks interesting as I fancy it.

My lot aren't fussy and have yet to out and out reject anything I've fed them.

They don't eat a lot of the dry - just nibble on it - so the 40 kilos of porta is about 6 months worth. If I buy 7ish Kilos of something else and a couple of doz tins to mix it up every other month, it lasts the year.

I'll likely buy two each of the big 20x packs of Bozita - 160 cans is again around 6 months, depending on how much my boy eats as he grows (he's already massive (and solid, not soft) and still hasn't grown into his paws at around the 4kilo mark - I think I've a mini tiger by mistake :rotfl: most beautiful natured cat I've ever lived with tho).

I like the look of the lily's, and quite a few people have been talking about Animonda Carny, so I'm considering their trial pack.

Combined with the odd kilo pack of chicken wings for in the freezer, means I don't have to budget for/ remember to shop.

Oh for cats that aren't fussy! I'm jealous.

Everything you've mentioned looks good. If your cats are happy I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I also feed the portia 21 grain free. Will be ordering a bag of taste of the wild next time just to see if the unusual protein helps any with my cats sensitive skin issues. If not I'll be back to portia.

One will only eat pate type wet foods. One will only eat shredded chicken type. Not so bad with her since I just buy a chicken Breast from the butchers and boil it. She is really tiny so only eats tiny amounts.

The other is a fussy sod. One day he loves it. The other he won't touch it.

Won't touch raw at all either. Little sod.

Well my cat decided to try a new food tonight, a whole tub of soya spread, hopefully she'll do that poo outside...
