DVLA late licensing penalty letter

HI I moved house and didnt tell the DVLA my new address, because of this I didnt recieve a road tax renewal letter. I rely on these letters to remind me to pay my road tax, so my car wasnt taxed for four months.

I have subsequently recieved a debt collectors letter demanding a £80
fine. I had no intention of not paying the tax and paid it on the day recieved the letter, however do I have to pay the fine?It was just a genuine mistake on my part.

The used to be a VED disc on the windscreen with the expiry date. Did you not see it?
  • Which are you claiming as the genuine mistake? Not informing the DVLA of your change of address or not renewing your VED in time?

One could be remiss but to do both?

You dont have to pay it but the DVLA and their debt collectors do take people to court if they dont payup.

Add court costs and you may wish you had just paid it in the first place.

PS get yourself a diary. With no tax disc now your more likely to forget again.

Thanks for the quick reply. You might think Im stupid but when I changed my address on my driving licence I thought the DVLA records would update with that .

As for not renewing my VED I normally just renew it on the day I get the reminder and then dont think about it. Then forget about it till the next year.

They really are both genuine mistakes Im not out to con people on here. I know some people try not to pay VED but Ive paid it for the last twenty years . I drive a Corsa so its not a mega amount to pay but I dont particularly want to pay the fine if I dont have to , but will always try do whats right.

The other poster who mentions the tax disc , yes it was on my car but I just didnt look at it as I thought it was all in order.

They have you - you might as well take the hit and move on. A note in your diary might help now there are no more tax discs (but as you didn't look at your last one, what can I say?). They also get your your insurance runs out - something else to watch!

Your Driving Licence has nothing to do with any Cars you may have registered - it has always been separate.

I don't think your stupid. I understand your expectation but did you also return the V5 document which relates to the car?

I suspect more people may be caught out in future under the new system as a cursory glance at the disc on the screen served as a frequent visual reminder to keep it up to date.

No I didnt send the V5 document off. I have had the car for 10 years, not moved house in that time, so it wasnt a document I thought about. Im not making excuses . My mistake, I will send it off Monday. You like and learn I suppose.
