Cheapest car to buy and run

Hi all,

I am in the unfortunate situation where I need to start thinking about buying a different car.

I would like to get a car that not only is cheap to run but also cheap to buy.

Has anyone got any advice on what cars come under this category?

Many thanks
Lorraine

  • We'll need a bit more info:

    - Budget
    - Size of car needed
    - Age of car that would be acceptable

    :)
  • Hello! I got myself a Vauxhall corsa, 1.0ltr fantastic little cars, super cheap to tax insure and run. Parts and labour are also relatively cheap and are widely available.
Had my corsas for years with no trouble! Very relaible little run-arounds in my opinion :) x

    Hi

I would be looking for a small car nothing fancy. Budget up to £200 pm. Ideally a lot less. I have seen deals for £100 pm before but unsure whether they are good.

I am happy to have new or used.

Let me know what you think.

    Thank you

  • Smart cars are said to be really good and economical. A friend of mine had one and it was the worst car they ever had. It was a nice car and they fell in love with it but general garages wouldn't touch it. It HAD to be Mercedes own garages and their costs were horrendous. It was something like £140 an hour and that was even without doing any repairs, it was just looking at things to give a diagnosis.

VW Golf Mk4 TDI. Getting old now but still very reliable and very cheap to run.

Not sure from the mention of amounts p/m, are you looking for a cheap car to buy or to hire/PCP one?

Golf TDI should be around £1000 so you wouldn't need to PCP

Years ago I was in the same situation and bought a low milage Austin Maestro, 1.6. Was the best buy ever, 3 years later I got my money back and two of my kids had learned to drive with it!
It was cheap as no-one wanted it so look for unpopular cars, Rovers, Daewoos etc. There are some bargains out there.
  • My Megane 1.6 cost £400 last March with a full year MOT. Couldn't get cheaper than that.

    £100/£200 p/m - madness!

What miles will you be doing.
What do you need the car for

£200pm is that for everything, purchase, tax, insurance, maintenance, fuel?

do you have any cash or are you going to borrow to buy?

have you run a car before?

    How old are you?
If young then a Corsa may be expensive to insure.

What about something common like a Ford Focus? Or a Mondeo? Both easy and cheap to pickup. Stick with petrol cars if you want cheap to run.
