is this an acceptable method of installation ?
I'm considering replacing our very tired and old patio with a new one and as it is mainly stable( couple of slabs would need to be removed) it wouold be much much easier to lay the new one directly on top of existing one , it would also reduce wastage, reduce the depth of aggregate that i would need and give me quite a stable base to build on.
can anyone forsee any problems in doing this ?
thanks

It's a bad idea.
You'll have bedding under the original patio, then the patio itself, then the new bedding then the new patio.
Mainly stable just now doesn't mean stable for all time but removing the old patio to formation level IS stable for all time.
Extra layers also means more place for water to gather and slabs will start moving a lot sooner than they would if you removed the original patio.
