Offshore/secret bank account to stash the cash ?????

Perhaps the best countries would be those with which the UK has poor diplomatic relations e.g. Iran, Russia. In the case of the former, there may be terrorism suspicions. To get around the tax issue, what about 0% interest accounts? Plenty of poor paying accounts exist here, and he may avoid account fees. Better to lose 5% a year interest than 50% on divorce!
I agree the OP has a valid point, and would urge posters not to post ‘Don’t get married.’ In some cultures there’s a lot of pressure to marry. Beware that the Government has unveiled legislation to give cohabiting couples equal rights. Perhaps the best option is living apart together, but the increase in single households is contributing to the housing crisis.
If your friend is from an ethnic minority community, what about putting the cash in the country of ethnic origin? Could the assets (including the house here) be registered in the name of a parent?0 -
Buy gold/diamonds and bury it away for 5 years? They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0

Personally I think European law is better thought out for the modern world.
Either party gets to keep any assets acquired before the marriage took place and also any wealth individually inherited.
Wealth acquired during the marriage is equally split on divorce after taking account of the children's needs.
It discourages gold-diggers, whatever their gender. It's wrong to assume these days that it will always be the man that brings assets to a marriage.Trying to keep it simple...

Whilst pre-nups aren't legally binding, they are a starting point for any judge in the event of divorce, as they clearly set out the intentions of each party at the outset of marriage.
"If you go into marriage without the protection of a prenup, you don't need a lawyer, you need a psychiatrist!"
Some would call this cynical. I call it realistic and pragmatic.0 -
I'm sorry, but how can you say that deceiving your wife-to-be about your assets isn't devious? If you can't be honest with her, at least be honest wth yourself.
How can you be deceiving your wife-to-be about your assets if you don't tell her about them? If you tell them how much money you have you may as well be heading for gold digger city if the marriage breaks down. This is a very valid topic. Its true that there are many people on here, male or female, who have carefully saved all their lives. These are assets that were not a product of a marriage, and should be protected. Everybody starts marriages with the best intentions, but things go wrong and people do change or cheat.
So if european law is fairer, does this mean that all we have to do is get married in that country, or do you have to be resident in that country for those laws to apply in the case of divorce?
BTW: Cease with the unhelpful typical British comments of don't get married, its not really very helpful, or funny. Maybe theres another reason to leave the country - to get away from those sorts of people in the UK.0 -
LOL! If we're into that kind of logic, I think I'll move on :-)MiserlyMartin wrote: »How can you be deceiving your wife-to-be about your assets if you don't tell her about them?0
