First time buyer - can having assets abroad help?

So...I have started thinking about buying a flat -but I feel immensely overwhelmed.
I need some help figuring out a few things... I am saving for a deposit, however - I am originally from Italy (been in the UK for 10 years) and back there I have a house which my parents have put on my name.
I am now wondering if having an asset can help in buying a flat here? Can I use that as a 'guarantor'? Would that make it any easier for me without the bank of mum&dad (I'd rather not ask for their help at the moment as they don't have a lot of money at the moment).
Please forgive me if this sounds extremely naive but even though I have read about this I am still very confused...
thanks!
