    I think it's better to put some things in a letter kept with the will but I don't think there are any laws about it.

    It's always worth keeping in mind that a will becomes a public document so don't put anything in it that you don't want to world to see. A letter kept with the will can explain your decisions in the will or lay out what you would like to happen after your death while remaining reasonably private.
