Santander Debit Card Issues

Hi All, hope you all had a good Christmas and new year?
Bit of a strange one this but I'll ask anyway. I am currently on my 3rd Santander debit card in the space of 6 months. The card works fine in any shop up until the point I try to use it in Tesco. When I enter the card into the terminal, it states "no chip detected" and no amount of cleaning, waving, swearing etc will get it to read the chip. From this point on, the card will then no longer work in any shop! As I said before, this is the 3rd card this has now happened on.
Does anybody else have any experience of this and if so, what was the solution (other than changing bank....) The issue appears to lie with Tesco chip and pin machines but my partner also uses Santander and her card works fine in Tesco.

No way REALLY?
So do i and my wife. Both between Santander Tesco and in fact their petrol station pay@pumps!! The machines seem to scratch the chip on the card.0 -
So you have the same issues too?0

Have you ever thought of buying your petrol elsewhere then?
Or paying in the shop?
Have you contacted Tesco to see if this is problem affecting other customers?
I stopped using Tesco years ago because there were never any receipts in the pumps and the staff inside were indifferent to being told about it.0 -
Static electricity can fry a Chip - I had a denim wallet that enclosed the card - the action of pulling it out quickly caused the spark that fried it. Not every time, but 1 in 30, usually in low humidity periods.
Changed wallet - problem solved!0 -
Out of interest, do you have any trouble using the chip in any other shop?
Most shops will let you swipe the credit/debit card and sign after 3 failed attempts but Tesco have this turned off on their self service machine. (although on their manned checkouts it does prompt them to swipe the card after 3 times).0 -

Thanks for the unhelpful advice.
Actually tesco fuel is the cheapest due to getting 10p off a litre from clubcard points. And yes it happens in the shop too.0 -
I have had this problem in Tesco stores but its when using my Barclaycard Amex, it says chip not detected, not had a problem anywhere else, the card works fine the next time I use it anywhere else.
Last time I had to go to the cash machine to get cash out to pay for my shopping 'cause I didn't have enough cash on me... bit annoying really.Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it.0 -

If it happens after 3 attempts, tell the cashier to swipe the card (most will do it if you ask but some will ask for photo ID), if they don't ask for a supervisor and they'll do it.0
