External door costs

Options
Hi
Can someone help me with this please. I want to replace 3 doors one at back 2 in front either upvc or 1 composite and 2 upvc. Got 4 different companies to come and quote me and all gave me a cost of about 1k for composite door and 600 each for upvc double glazed.
I saw a lot of doors online too and the price on that is starts from about 100 pounds for upvc on ebays to about 300 to 350 on wickes which provides tripple glazed upvc and other door manufacturers. Composites start from around 350 on ebay to 70max on wickes and other door manufacturers. Yale and valuedoor are in the range of about 600 for upvc to 1k for composite.
With so many different options which one would you think is in the middle.
I think and I could be wrong but retailers like wickes are giving a good value for money door but noinstallation but 10 year warranty on allupvc's homebase only gives for 2 years.
Any other places I coulkd look at which you guys can recommend are good and economical.
I know you get what youpay for so100 pound doors from ebay might not be thebestoption but worth considering as I am on a slightly tight budget but then I don't want that I put it and find out they are completely useless as there is alotof draught coming fromporche into house and hence the reason to change the two doors in the front

what is your budget? You have had 4 quotes. All around the same. Surely you felt more comfortable with one of them?

You need to compare like with like.

Internet will always be cheaper but you will not be able to get the same level of service of a good local independent. The latter will cost more.

I would say you've got enough quotes and just need to decide.

I did our doors recently. There were some internet suppliers with good reviews here on mse. I prefer paying more for a face to face personalised service which is what I paid for. I'm too fussy about the exact look to trust the internet.

The reason I am so confused is that there is a massive difference between local people to ebay and mid range on wickes etc. I am not planning to live in my current house for more than 2 to 3 years and don't see a very good reason to spend about 2500 pounds on doors when I will leave anyways. I know 2 to 3 years is a long time but I am only looking to replace them as there is a problem of draught, they are old wooden doors, no amount or weatherstrip is really going to work on it.

I assuming that the door on ebay for £100 are second hand

we also have wooden doors to the front and the back and i know that the can be problematic in the winter as they have a tendency to expand and contract over the years due to the weather

If your doors all close properly and you can lock them then in my opinion they really don't need replacing espeically if you are due to move out in a couple of years time id leave them

If it's just a drought issue then i would advise you to use fairly thick draft exclude-rs all around the door also you could hang really thick material of some sort this will also help keep the cold out and try to seal any gaps in the door itself by using a wood sealer

dont spend all that money on new doors when really the old ones are still doing they job to an extent

my motto is "if it's not broke dont fix it"

    hope this helps you

  • What age is the house? If the doors are a period feature be wary of getting rid of the doors, you may reduce your house value and spoil the look of the house!

    Hi
Thanks for the suggestions. The house is about 80 to 90 years old and all the houses in the street are upvc doors. There are draughts and also giving problems closing them and i have now stopped using one of the lock too as it wouldnt lock anymore. It does lock during summer. They are sticking too much now.
  • You're not going to live there long and all of the doors in the street are UPVC so go for a second hand door off ebay.

How do you know if a second hand door will meet current regs? Even if BC are not involved, it's a standard question from the buyer's solicitor as to the certification for any doors or windows replaced since the energy efficiency measures came in.

Yep I agree if your current doors are not closing/locking the a secondhand one from ebay might be an option door =£100 fitting =£100 -£130

If you decide to go for the ones on ebay make sure the you messure your doors including the frame - get this part wrong and you can run in to trouble pvc doors are not like wood one's (obliviously:rotfl:) where if they dont fit you can sand the wood one's down

the measurements are very tight on pvc doors and a very small margin for error (you cant sand pvc doors lol)

Brother has a Brand new pvc security door door paid £1500 Ripoff!!

Thanks all for the reply, I was about to go ahead with cheap doors from ebay when I got this local installer tell me that you will need a fensa certificate when you sell the house for the doors, is that true?
I checked online and its not clear if I need or should have one or no.

I looked into new doors and just to point out there are different types of composite doors available. Solid core or grp. The solid core will set u back £1200 or more fully fitted but the grp about £800 or so.
