Is it viable to DIY-fit a Velux/Rooflite type window?

Is it viable to DIY-fit a new Velux/Rooflite type window and flashing? It's for an attic, and I'm really asking if this is achievable from the inside, although I do have ladders which will reach above the gutter and could support some sort of apron to catch anything I might drop (it's a terraced house which fronts directly onto the pavement). It'll have to be a centre pivot one, because I can't see how I'd secure the top of the frame of a top pivot.

Did mine from inside my attic space no problem. My roof had interlocking concrete tiles though so once a couple are off it's a doddle to remove the rest. Don't know if a tiled roof would be more difficult.
I'm sure you need the correct fitting kit for the type of roof covering but I did do this a few years ago so it may be different now.

Fitting the window is quite straightforward.

Flashing came in the kit and if the window is a centre pivot like mine the centre can be removed completely whilst fitting the frame.

    It's slate, unfortunately.
Also I didn't mention it's to replace a wooden dormer.

I imagine that would end up being a considerably bigger job then.

  • I've just arranged with a Velux installer to have one fitted. He mentioned to me that they're not waterproof until completely installed - so if you're DIYing it you would need to be very sure that you could complete the job before you started. You don't want to find yourself in a position where you hit a problem and maybe needed to get someone in to finish it at a later date.

I presume you're referring to possible scaffolding costs rather than the fact that it's slate :)
