Pre-payment Meter - Paying a Debt

I moved into this rented property in November last year, and I have only realised that my gas pre-payment meter has been charging me a debt each time I top-up!
My suppler is N-Power, and to my recollection I have no debt with them. However, I do remember that when setting up the account when I moved into this property that there was already a debt on the meter and they had to supply me with a new gas card.
The amount of 'debt' I have been paying has been around £3 for every £10 I top up, and I have topped up a lot during the winter period!
I will contact my supplier tomorrow as their lines are closed at the moment, but in the meantime, if anyone can shed some light on any other reasons why I am paying these 'debt charges', it will be very much appreciated.

Because the supplier is n-power and frankly, they couldn't organise the proverbial in a brewery.
Good luck!0 -
They must love you, you have been paying the previous occupiers debt for them. Now you're going to have a fight on your hands to get that back. Did you take a meter reading when you moved in? If so - did you tell N power that reading? That is the crucial number which they will need along with the date you moved in/opened a PPM account with them. Good luck in getting it sorted out.0

it may just be standing charge its taking off, a couple of weeks of standing charge is nt far short of £3..Check screens 26 and 27 for debt, and debt repayment rate..press the red button a few times , then insert card and hold it down till it beeps. You can then see those 2 debt screen.
Funnily enough yesterday I went to a house with a young non english speaker who had exactly the same prob, there was £1500 debt on the electric owing on the prepay, she was paying £5 a week off the last occupants big debt of £3k on both gas and electric. she d only been in a month. The old occupier, also an immigrant, had just moved two doors down and was busy not paying a penny on the 2 credit meters she had.. This is how it works, keep moving around to new rentals with credit meters and move when they force fit prepays..Roll on smart prepays, at least the thieves would only get away with 1ks free energy instead of 3k. I m not allowed to quote individual races as its deemed to be racist.0
