best app for writing letters on iMac

I've been trying to find a basic app for the iMac for writing letters, that will have a spellchecker. There is so many out there its hard to find what you want. I was recommended a app called pages but the reviews are terrible, so any help on this would be great.

Page is an app made by Apple and it is equivalent of MS Word (but I must admit MS Word is a more powerful software). It's intuitive and I would say it's a lot easier to use than MS Word. For simple things as writing letters, I would highly recommend it.

If you bought the Mac recently, you can download this app for free, otherwise you'll have to buy it but I don't think it's too expensive (certainly a lot cheaper than MS Office).

    Pages.

It's hard to see why this is even a debate. It's free with recent Macs, too.

you could do a general search.

Open office tends to be popular and is free.

I find apple products VERY unintuitive and frustrating.
Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
    Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying

If it is only for letters then TextEdit should be more than adequate.

You may have to resort to tab stops rather than styles but that programme included with the OS is enough for letters.

I have had Macs for years and find NeoOffice is very easy to use as a basic word processor with a good spell checker and advanced features if you need them.
    Plus it is FREE!

    Hi

For the iMac you can install a complete Office Suite, like LibreOffice.

Certain parts of Apple's Mac OS X operating system are based on FreeBSD.
OS X's core is a POSIX compliant operating system (OS)

Which means that there are thousands of programs that will run (with a little bit of work) on an iMac that are not available from the apple store.

My iMac currently has Mavericks and Yosemite installed, with Windows 7 sitting alongside and then OpenSuSE was added just for a bit of versatility.

Linphone installs and runs on all 4, FaceTime only on the first two.

Be a little adventurous and daring with your machine.
