Morning all
I think msm is not reliable when it comes to a vs w. I got some swede from a. According to msm w didnt have any but when I got my apg it compared unfavourable 75p vs £1.25
Also the the various one apples I got did compare favourably but according to msm w didnt have those apples. Confusing
Folks I'm just catching up from several days ago - trying to go and have a proper read of something where you were all talking about me:D:D:D. (Gaw, that is awful - stick your teeth back in!:rotfl:) I only caught a glimpse of it before.
Anyway. Msm is reliable (as it ever gets) - of course it doesn't indicate exactly when things went OOS elsewhere that may still compare on the APG - but on this, I think this is the loose fruit and veg. situation. On loose fruit and veg., obviously the quantity you can in fact buy varies quite a lot, but sometimes msm.co.uk picks up specific quantities of loose fruit/veg at the supermarkets and shows the prices based on those. For example, if you look at msm, you find that all loose bananas in T are approx. 180g, whereas in A they are 170g. Obviously you can buy a completely different quantity to those figures in A (or in T). It says approx 180g for T however. And it shows a price based on that weight. That is why it says 12.2p for T. This seems to be a somewhat higher price than the price for A (11.6p), however it's simply because of the different weights that are shown on the site. As we know, they are 68p/kg in both and therefore compare to the same price (or sometimes a penny lower) on the APG.*
Sometimes the weights the site uses are so different that it doesn't show the prices on the competitor's product. So that W may be shown "---" under A's product for example. However, the quantities are available loose - you could get same quantity at both supermarkets and therefore they would be comparable. (It's different between fixed and variable weight products which are not interchangeable. So, if A has packs of Butcher's Selection Pork Chops at 470g - they are a fixed weight and all packs are that weight (or approximately) - they are non-comparable, sadly, to Morries Pork Chops that vary in weight from approx. 450g to 550g. (That example uses an instore Morries product, it could have a similar example using an online T, S or W product that varies in weight.))
Returning however to the situation of loose products (products sold by weight), that vary in weight of the quantity you can buy, clearly these may vary in weight from a specific weight that may be used by msm. For example, with loose apples. You will need to know the type of loose apple you are buying in A. Check to see that it is on msm for A so that, hopefully, it will count as an item on the APG. You then need to switch stores to the competitor you are planning to compare against. Search for the specific type of apple on there (either by name or a search for "apples" should bring up the types of apples so that you can see if your A one is there) - you may find the same type of loose apple (or whatever) in W and need to look at the price per kg for W and see whether that is a lot higher than the price per kg for the one in A.
I did the same earlier. A single loose carrot - I chickened out and, as my shopping was many pounds cheaper in W, I'd already got the 8 items but thought I'd add a loose carrot to the shop just in case. (Actually msm does show W price under A's loose carrots, so I'm defeating my own point:rotfl:.) But I switched to W to check the price per kg so that I could see what the 8p price was actually based on. W do have loose carrots and are at 80p/kg (T at 75p/kg - exact same as A even though, from the list on A Carrots, you'd think T was somewhat cheaper than A - A's carrots on there are 110g, T's obviously somewhat lower) - A at 75p/kg and W 80p/kg - not 10% cheaper, so in theory (apart from rounds up for W on low quantities against my favour) it shouldn't subtract from the APG. I know - some manage to get carrots that are 0p:rotfl:.
An example picked from the air: let's look at loose Royal Gala apples. A search for A on msm brings up the Royal Gala apples and shows T and S pricing. So may need to check T or S (as applicable) if comparing against there to see that not much higher than A's £1.94:eek:/kg. Check W on msm for Gala apples - yes, there are some there - Waitrose Royal Gala Apples by Weight (100g) (even though you can obviously get a lot more or less than 100g) - shows £1.95/kg, so - good to go!:)
Switching to T on msm - T £1.95/kg (allegedly OOS, as at time of posting). Sains £1.95/kg (29.5p for approx. 151g - despite the prices showing on the A side product, therefore not substantially higher priced in S - instead within not 10% cheaper). Morrisons - no loose Galas showing, but we do know Morries have loose Galas instore, price not specifically taken by me as probably increased compared to what it was before but quite likely to be the same, £1.95/kg.
So, just to try to trip you up, if you are looking to compare loose fruit or veg., you need, technically, to switch to the competitor and check to see if they have the product available there and what price per unit they are. Although, in most cases it probably won't lose you too much. And, if an item's fixed weight (in other words does not vary like this loose stuff), msm can go up or down by up to twice the size or half the size but the APG goes up or down by 10% (which is calculated from the weight of the A product). Sometimes msm misses the odd products that are as much as twice the weight or as little as half the weight - it tends to concentrate on those whose weights are close or the same, sometimes there are technical errors, in terms of different descriptions on the grocery shops' websites that don't link the products up when perhaps they should (they are also occasional errors based on the same thing that sometimes incorrectly link up to elsewhere:D:D - an example was Tiger Sausage Rolls vs Bread Rolls, but this is not always in our favour - an example single size toilet rolls in A linked up to double size ones in T at twice the price:().
If products aren't linked up, even if they should be, they won't compare on the APG as that takes its information from msm (unless, unlikely, the products have lost their linkage in the short time since the last update into the APG - the previous '6am' or 'midday'). If you spot a product that isn't linked up to a comparable competitor product but would be in our favour if it were to be, you can email msm support. If they agree it's comparable, they can change it on their site, so that, after then, we can all buy the A product. Don't bother with loose fruit/veg. as they are linked, even if the A product list of prices on the site doesn't suggest so. Equally, you can email their support if you find something way more expensive elsewhere that is non-comparable but incorrectly linked to the A product (like the loo rolls).
* Morries does not show a price on msm (either under the T product, under the A product or separately on the M side of msm) - this is because it does not sell loose bananas online, therefore they cannot be picked up by msm.co.uk (which works from 'scrapes' of online shopping sites). However, M sell loose bananas instore and they are picked up on instore price collections for M for the APG.0 -

Msm shows as £1.62 in m... Looks like its not picked it up yet:(
Just noticed this - from Wednesday and therefore using Monday's price data. May not be relevant now but...
This was exactly what I felt might happen and didn't want to risk. This worked - compared to £1.62 - on my shop on Monday (before the price collection had updated), therefore was picked up correctly on Wednesday last week. I bought just one, to test, on Saturday. When that worked, I bought more than one:D on Monday.
The beggars picked up full price in M instore on Monday. Probably M stores, yet again, failing to change their SELs in the main aisles but only having the half price out, with some of the product moved to there, in the freezers on the end of the aisles. It depends whether the price collectors notice it there or not. They don't have scannable SELs at the freezer ends, just the big offer labels, so wondering if the price collectors have to notice it and change things manually - if they don't, and that happens in most of their collection stores - then maybe get full price as per the SEL scan?:( I don't know if they picked up £1.62 again on Wednesday and therefore the current APG information. All I know is that, as soon as it worked for me last Saturday, I was definitely going to get all the rest of them that I bought on that price collection data and not wait a moment into any future one. Sorry it didn't work:(. Blame M:rotfl:.0 -

I doubt people would have seen, but I did put a Tvs S list onto the 'third post' (immediately below the M list) a couple of days ago. I've now sorted it out, but doesn't look much there. Nonetheless, it's at post 1499 (page 38 on 40 posts setting). Those Clipper Teas at S price 65p didn't turn out to be very good at all, based on price per unit. Beware that this was compiled two days ago, hasn't been rechecked since (though I doubt anything will have changed) and needs to be cross-referred vs sains.co.uk and, even then, with care over alleged N/A Sains. items as, although your/my S may not stock and show on sains.co.uk in our area, Sains. might stock elsewhere in the country.
I noted this at the time I was saving stuff into Tvs S. Maybe a trigger to the 3 for £10 in A? Showing OOS for A on msm for me. May be of interest if other triggers (if indeed it is a trigger) should stop (or if people want different products to buy). It was showing A OOS like this two days ago, just as it is now. Careful - of course no guarantees it will work. Don't shoot messenger;) - I'm just telling you what I see!

I may have missed if this has already been posted or someone may already be able to confirm that they know it is a trigger? (Or that it's been tried and unsuccessful?)
