Before my laptop takes a flight out the window...
It is 8years old and has become a nightmare. Booting up is turn it on and make a cup of tea job. Ongoing issues with Windows updates - the abridged version - it continually looses SP1, install it, wants to install SP2, then decides it can't as it hasn't got SP1. So then refuses to install most other updates.
Periodically throws a Blue Screen of Death, but restarts no problem.
Despite replacing the battery it only works when plugged in to the mains.
No virus issues. Have reinstalled the os (vista) and only reinstalled programs we actually use.
I had a brief speculative chat with a local repair shop who advised getting rid.
Husband is of the mind to just replace it. I hate our throwaway society and can't justify replacing it whilst it actually works (so long as you are not in a hurry).
If I replace it I am looking to spend just a few hundred pounds. My needs have reduced, so only need it for the things my tablet can not do.
Can anyone suggest anything I've not tried? Or a good deal on a laptop for light home use?
TIA

starting afresh, and putting vista back on should resolve most issues other than the battery
downloading and applying the service packs manually may work better than the windows update method.
laptops are faster/cheaper than 8 years ago, so if vista updates are still a pigs ear, then you could buy something for a couple of 100, which is not much more than w7, or you could hang on for 9 months until W10 is out.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -

So it seems there's nothing mechanically wrong with the machine, and all your problems are related to the software on your hard drive.
I would; copy all the data you want/need to save onto other media - USB stick, CD, external HDD, etc.
Download all the drivers for the following stage from the interweb - maker's web sites etc.
Get a fresh OS. Go on eBay and get an install disc for Windows XP or XP Professional. Vista is no good. Install XP, formatting the HDD to remove all trace of the previous OS.0
