Please can anyone help me decide which printer i should buy for general home occasional use?.
I purchased a hp 3050a j611 series only 14 months ago ! , but im realising how much replacement ink cartridges are to replace, the printer cost £30 from tescos & i have only spent £12 on replacing the ink in 2014, i have priced more ink for about £20 which is takeing it over the price of the printer when purchased new.
So if anyone can give me some good free advice on which one to buy and the cheapest ink that is reqd afterwards . I will be giveing my old printer to one of the children , who wont mind buying ink to keep it running for a few years or so.
I realise that i will be paying a little more for the printer & i hope to be paying less for ink in the future , i did a search on here , but came across very little info , i thank you in advance for any advice you can help me with to purchase a wireless printer.

I was in the same boat as you and came to the same conclusion! Had the HP for about 2 years (cost me £20 from HP direct) but it was clear why the printer was so cheap, HP were making all the money on the ink.
I've switched to a Canon MG5550 which is giving me better quality prints and does double sided (duplex) to save paper costs. Ink isn't cheap but it doesn't seem to go through it as fast as the HP and being 5 cartridges you only replace when the specific colour required is out.
Currently on offer at Argos: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1906725.htm
Inks are cheaper from the likes of Amazon.0 -
I have a Canon MG5450 and I can buy a full set (5) of compatible chipped inks (from fleabay) for less than £10. Just check that the machine you buy will accept compatible inks. Most ink websites will tell you this. I use the Canon for colour printing and photos and as Colin said, with separate carts you only have to change the empty one not all of them. To save ink, I have switched off the eco power saving gismo as this switches the printer off after each time you use it, but, it cleans the head every time you switch it back on so can actually waste more ink than you use. ( Now just have to wait for the 'eco warriors' to slag me off for wasting electric! As if I care!)0

HI CHIPPY.
Will have a look at that one . as i have with Colins (£50), less than £10 seems good for the inks, my main object is the price of ink refills, thanks for replying.:)0 -
Epson are the cheapest when it comes to replacement inks. I have an Epson XP-215 All in One and get inks for £10 for 3 full sets on ebay and they are just as good as originals and last longer.0

hi.
bit of research done with a friend & have come across this one,
EPSOM XP 102 Argos £45
tesco £39.
replacement ink cartridges 25 for £7,99
this sounds good , does anyone have any comment or advice on this Epsom printer.
Thanks for your reply collabora & h.n,year to you all.;)0 -
I always used HP printers until just over a year ago. Replaced with an Epson XP-600. Don't think the one I have is still available. No complaints with Epson, quality of ink etc.
I personally would pay extra to have the features I have on my printer - wifi and duplex printing. My printer allows printing cds/dvds. Not something I am likely to use.0 -

Before you end up buying a new printer, check out the prices of compatible cartridges. I would highly recommend this website as I had good experience buying compatible ink cartridge from them.0

so why link to the top of this thread?
I have a couple of regular supplier that are n ebay and have never has any issues, one even exchanged nearly 5 full sets when i have to change printers0 -
I have just purchased a Canon Pixma MG6853 from John Lewis (best price and with cash back). I spent a lot of time researching and this had all the features I wanted in a compact design - wifi, phone printing, cloud connection, double sided printing etc.
What I didn't check was that compatible 571 cartridges are available - they're not. Looking at £40 for a set of Canon. I'm hoping that it's due to the printer being relatively new unless technology has now made it impossible to use rogue cartridges 😬0
