Double Glazing costs

Hi,
We have had a quote today for double glazing from Crystal Windows in our terraced house in Hertfordshire. We have 8 windows in total, one of which is a bay window with 3 panels. Taking that into account we have 10 full windows, where we are looking for just regular uPVC (ie no Georgian frames etc).
The price we have been quote was £8429, or £7600 if we were to say yes whilst the sales man was here. This was apparently with their "up to 40% off" discount applied.
We were expecting a quote closer to the £5k mark. Are we being unrealistic or were we over priced based on the fact we were quite open about the fact that we were new to the housing market?
Thanks,
Michael

Ask strangers on an internet forum whilst providing no dimensions or relevant details.
Or get some more quotes from other providers.

Get a local tradesman round to price up.

No

Yes
on the fact we were quite open about the fact that we were new to the housing market?
No. Most companies overprice.
Thanks,
Michael
2) never sign up on the day. If they say the price offerred is 'today only' they are lying.
3) check the rating of the windows offerred
4) check the warranty is 'insurance backed'
5) check the company is one of these
6) check the manfacturer of the windows
7) check the manufacturer/type of glazing used in the windows
Oh, and shop around again......0 -

we will shop around, but I just wanted to see if we were being unrealistic compared to what other people had been quoted/paid for windows.0 -
Depends on if you can be your own foreman or not. If you go direct to a window manufacturer 10 average size windows including facias and sills would be 3k tops.
Find a local joiner who could fit them for a weeks wages and save the rest. Salesmen make commission, salesmen's supervisors make commission everybody in the company gets a piece of your £7400, cutting them out is the way if you can do it.0 -
Clearly, clearly, any company that gives you such random quote and discount is just fishing for gullible punters.
Draw your own conclusions as to whether you want to have anything to do with them.
Clearly, clearly, as advised shop around and get more quotes.0 -

i think youre making it too complex mate, as has been suggested before get two or three local firms (fensa registered, and can provide IBG) to quote and I would say youd pay half what the big boys quote0 -
Had a similar experience with a large local firm 3 years ago. We were quoted around £9k for 9 windows including 2 sash windows but it was "reduced" to £7500 if we signed up there and then. I got the jitters about it so I asked friends for recommendations and went to a place that never advertises. They quoted £2800 for the same specification and did a fabulous job. When we needed another window replacing, we went straight to them and it was around £550 fully installed with a FENSA guarantee. Definitely shop around.0

Sounds very expensive!
I would get a local independent window fitter to give a quote.
Our local one quoted us around £12k to change every window and door in a large 4 bed detached house that we were looking at buying.
Saying that, we paid Safestyle UK £1000 to change our front door to one of a reasonable standard after a LOT of haggling. Our local man was a bit cheaper, but had a very long waiting list at the time.
Make sure they can give you a FENSA certificate.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0
