Cancelling holiday one day later

Hi All
My wife and I booked a holiday with first choice today. It is for June next year. After we got home we checked and we have a clash () We spoke to them straight away (about 2 hour after making the deposit payment by credit card)
We wanted to move the holiday by a couple of days. FirstChoice said that we could transfer the deal to another hotel and pay £50 for this new hotel. (not a problem) but then they would charge us £200 to move the holiday.
My understanding is that we can cancel these things within 7 days. If we can do this then I can cancel the holiday and rebook the new one rather than just transfer it. I thought al lthings that were bought (physical like toys) or holiday always had a grace period to cancel/return.
Is my understanding correct? Or do I have to pay the £200 if I want it transferred?
Thanks

There is no free cancellation period for travel, it is specifically excluded from the Distance Selling Regs and Consumer Protection Regs. Once you have booked, as a general rule deposits are lost unless you can move the dates with agreement of the operator. A warning to everyone to make sure you can travel before booking, not afterwards0

Your understanding is incorrect. Certain services - like insurance - have a cooling off period, as do items ordered online/by phone, but holidays and toys do not.
You'll be at the mercy of whatever their cancellation policy is. Given how quickly you notified them I'd personally keep at them for a discount on the charge as a goodwill gesture, but they're legally entitled to charge you that (assuming it's in your paperwork somewhere) so be prepared to do so.0 -
Is it not possible to change the other thing you have booked?0
