How to get a duplicate invoice

Options
Hi,

I am not sure if this is the correct forum but it is business related :)

I purchased a laptop for work a few weeks back in store at John Lewis on my business debit card. I have however lost the receipt. John Lewis are unable to to locate the transaction despite giving all the information I had.

I know it was tardy to just lose the invoice, but does anyone have any ideas how I can get a duplicate invoice?

Any insight appreciated.

MG

It looks like you are looking for a receipt rather than an invoice, An invoice is a demand for payment. Since the item has already been paid for, it is unlikely that you will get an invoice now, unless you want to pay twice.

Are you wanting proof of purchase for some reason? A receipt would be handy for this, but not always necessary.

Are John Lewis deigning that you bought it from them?
  • I have had this problem before when wanting to take back a laptop. I was told no receipt, no guarantee. I showed them my bank statement, card etc but nothing other than the receipt would do.

They said the receipt is what would match up that particular item.

It isn't that the has gone wrong, but merely the fact that without I don't think I can claim it against the company as no proof exists if that makes sense.

If you wanted to claim the VAT back, it might be an issue.

However to claim it as a company asset I think that you are fine as long as you can show how much you paid for it, which you presumably can with bank statements, etc.

Receipt is helpful to prove your purchase to HMRC if you get inspected, but they're not idiots and as long as you have a way to demonstrate the amount and date they'll cut you some slack if it's just one item. If on the other hand you do this with every purchase they may want to dig deeper (poor recordkeeping is an indicator for possible owed back-taxes, so they may take a keener look).

My suggestion would be to find the bank statement line and print that out and highlight the line and use that as a placeholder for the original receipt in your filing.
