MBNA Rate for Life Application

Hi all,

Just before Xmas, I made an application for the above card.
I was instantly approved with the credit limit that they would give.

I got the normal approval message that the card and pin would arrive in the next 5-10 days.

I received a letter this morning asking me to call MBNA, which I did.
I had too confirm my basic details (name, postcode & DOB).

She then said she would check the status of the stage the application is at. 2 minutes later, she came back and said that the application had been approved by the underwriter and that she would have to ask a few security questions to finish off the application.

Once answering the security questions, she said that all is fine and the card and pin will be sent out now, along with the usual spiel, activate the card when it arrives and set up the online account for management etc.

My question is, is this normal procedure for an instant approved credit app, in term off being instantly approved and then going to a underwriter for approval again?

I applied for a Barclaycard around the same time last year and was instantly approved, card and pin was sent within 10 days without underwriters interceding.

Thanks for any feedback.

  • They're allowed to refer it to the underwriters after they've accepted you, BarclayCard are known for doing it all the time, they often even reject you but tell you you've been accepted.

It happens, you've been accepted though, so party on.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

I wasn't quite sure whether a trigger in the application caused it to be referred to the underwriter or whether it is standard practice to always be referred to a underwriter even if approved instantly.

I assume from your reply that sometimes it is referred and some times it may just get through without any intervention.
